Barnsley are fucking shite really.
[rant]
Everything started to went downhill (again!) when I left England. It always happens. The last match I saw was awful, we lost 3-4 against Luton at home. We've been pretty shite ever since, until the last two league matches, we won Huddersfield away and then Chesterfield at home. But then... a 7-1 defeat against Man City in the League Cup. We were so bad that it was almost funny. I've listened (or watched) every game during the last two seasons, sometimes I wonder why I bother really. ARGH.
Now we're losing 1-0 against Port Vale (away) in the LDV Vans Trophy tinpot cup. Well, there's still 45 mins left, maybe we'll score a lucky goal and win the replay match at the Oakwell...
[/rant]
But I still love them.

oh.my.god.
can somebody tell that nice spanish chap mr. benetiz that we need to mark players on set pieces....
please?
both tonite and the utd game - you'd think they'd learn eh.
oh well, as long as we win us home games in the champs league then we'll go through, so it's not the end of the world, but am i the only one who winces whenever the opposition gets a set piece now? |

we were shit defending set pieces when we were good. anyone remember the 4-3 cup semi v palace - not exactly in the "how to defend set pieces" manual.
the problems go a bit deeper than that. obviously that is a problem, and it will get worse if everyone tries to exploit it, but not for the first time away this season, we created
nothing

That Palace game was an epic match. I was devastated when we lost, we would have played Man U in the final as well and we'd have beaten them and Fergie would have been sacked and our dominance of the English game would have continued forever.
To be honest I didn't expect much from this season so I'm not that disappointed by our inability to win away from home. The home form suggests that we might be heading in the right direction and it sounds like we're trying to pass it around a bit. I wonder how long it will be before Baros or Cisse get bored with being on the bench and want to move? Do they look like they can't play together or is Garica playing that well that he shouldn't be dropped? I wonder if Michael Owen still thinks he made the right decision to leave, it doesn't sound like he's getting much of a look in at Real. |

hmm, not sure quite how we'd have dominated english football from 6th place under souness! but we should have won that game and the double that season, and in 88 and 89.

the home games have been very encouraging. but the away games have been really bad. the passing and fluency seen at anfield are replaced with carelessness and desparation away. at least benitez isn't happy after performances like last night, or blaming it on the referee, the weather, tired players...
luis garcia has been playing very well at anfield. but he did well on the right on saturday with baros and cisse up front, so there's no reason why they can't all play. cisse is struggling a bit. he doesn't seem to fit in with the way the team are playing, and has been visably very frustrated during games when he hasn't got the right pass. hopefully it just needs time...
owen must have realised he wouldn't get an automatic place with raul, ronaldo and morientes at real. but maybe he's seen how many chances we've created in some games this season and wishes he'd stayed. there are rumours that real will sell him at the end of the season, so maybe he'll come back. |

I hope Cisse sorts himself out, it might even take a whole season though, it took Henry a while to get used to the Premiership.
I've just read an article about Rooney saying that this might be as good as it gets for him. I suppose that might be right, I'm not sure that Michael Owen was ever really as good for Liverpool as he was when he first burst onto the scene, maybe players don't always get better as they get older. Its really sad to see Fowler not even able to get on the bench at City, if he'd been luckier with injuries he still could be Englands number one striker, nevermind City's number 5. |

it's certainly too early to give up hope on cisse, but only time will tell. playing alternate games probably isn't going to help him though.
i think owen got better as an all round player at liverpool. don't think he'd have scored that cup final goal against arsenal with his left foot when he first got in the team. i think he lost a bit of his pace with his injuries and there's always a "surprise factor" with a player when they first get in the first team, which obviously disappears with time as defenders learn how to cope.
who knows what will happen to rooney? given his character, going off the rails completely, especially with the hype that will surround him, has to be a possibility. if he can avoid that, he could become a great player. goals against croatia and switzerland in euro2004 and against turkish opposition in europe don't prove that yet.
fowler had it all in 1996. it must have been more of a struggle after the injuries he had, but the motivation just didn't seem to be there after about 97. maybe he thought he didn't have anything more to prove. a waste of a great talent. |

Poor old Robbie, I have spent countless nights in drunken stupors tell anyone who'll listen just how good he was. I think Dave W has said before that he was just unlucky to be at his peak at the same time as Shearer so he didn't get much of a chance in the England team. He'll probably end up retiring soon and will only have his millions of pounds in the bank to comfort him, poor guy.
Everyone over here is getting very excited as Harry Kewell is actually going to play for the Australian national team next week, his appearance record for them makes Ryan Giggs look like he's thoroughly committed to all Wales games in comparison. They're going to be gutted when he turns up and isn't very good. However they're only playing the Soloman Islands so maybe he'll be OK. Harry, if you're reading this, your performances are inversely related to how interesting your haircut is, when you shaved your head you were brilliant but since coming to Liverpool your haircuts have become increasingly interesting but your performances haven't. Lose the hair and regain your ability.
I've just read that Jamie Carragher is only 26! He's been around forever. |

nice goal by Luis Garcia today
now I'm just hoping for a 0-0 draw in the Man U v Arsenal game
most people probably think the Gooners will win it, seeing as "the best strikeforce in Europe" (Ruud VN, Rooney, Smith, Saha, Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs) hasn't been able to score in a brothel lately, but I can't see it being a pushover for, wait, I didn't say pushover... err, I mean, I can't see Arsenal winning comfortably. I just don't want Utd to win, coz it'll be like they've won the World Cup, no, the Universe Cup, or some new title the tabloids will make up just for Utd, if they win the game. and obviously, I don't want Arsenal pulling any more ahead of Liverpool than they already are. |

Michael Owen scored the winning goal for Real Madrid again, perhaps it was a good move for him after all.
I hope that Arse-nal beat ManUre, I just can't stand Manchester United.
My favourite club Barnsley have been so shite lately that I haven't posted in the football thread, they're crawling somewhere near the bottom of Division Two (ok,
Coca Cola Football League One
). I've listened to every game this season and seen a few, and I can't believe how unlucky we've been. Well, perhaps the luck changes just before Christmas and Barnsley starts winning again and finishes the season in top 6 and then wins the playoffs... erm yeah. _________________

Yeah, your love affair with Barnsley must have ended when they beat Liverpool in the Premier League.

nice dive by Rooney for Utd's penalty today
nice bit of bottling by the ref not to send off Ferdinand for taking Ljungberg out of it when he was through on goal
nice to see Utd win fairly, as usual
not that I have much sympathy for any team who has their own fair share of divers (hello Ashley Cole. HELLO Robert Pires) |

But we dislike United most of all don't we? Why do they always get the least likeble players?
