Thanks to F-H and TTLC on the Plymouth angles...don't let the PNE guy try to muscle in ...too late. The kit is on the way.
Question...just had a hilarious conversation with a friend from the UK and learned a new term: Chav or Chaver
Being that this is the Brave Captain forum and not the christina aguilara site I thought, perhaps< I could get everyones take on this term.
WHAT IS A CHAV?
Innit? |

I have to report TTLC that he just loves cricket (even fielding!)
Whenever I pick him up from school and at least once at the weekend we go and have a knock around and I've always got the bat, ball and stumps in the back of the car.
Was going to try a 20-20 game at Taunton but the fixtures didn't fit, so might try a couple of sessions of a county match cos you can mess around on the outfield during the intervals and when I was a kid that was the best thing about cricket watching.
And, best of all, he wants a cricket sunhat like my NZ one, so next time me or my dad are up there he'll get his very own Somerset one. _________________ Be sad, be happy and be wise |

| Forbes, forget the cricket, buy him a tennis racket. If he can hit it over the net then he'll be in the British top 100 hundred instantly and if he can do any of that fancy over arm serving stuff then the press will be lauding him as the saviour of the sport in this country within weeks. He can then retire rich at the age of 9 and get on with the rest of his life. |

I get confused just trying to understand someone going to WATCH a match (a 20-20 or the county...what?)
Stumps...funny word.
VERY cool, however, that one can play on the field between halves. Can do that here.
Cricket...15 minutes of excitement JAM PACKED into six hours. Just like baseball |

oi!! there's damn few things better than the combination of sunshine, baseball & beer... particularly if you are watching the mighty chicago cubs... but perhaps you are a southsider.
however, i will admit that footy is more exciting to watch overall...

I suppose this is the part where I should lapse into that comedy tea towel thing which tries to explain cricket to non-believers by using the words 'in' and 'out' in a variety of increasingly wacky ways.
Jeff in Chicago; unlike baseball, cricket now comes in a number of different packages lasting from 5 days to the 20-20 (which is basically the number of overs each side gets) that lasts about the length of a baseball game. And now look what you've got me doing. I'll be explaining the rules in full shortly. Many summers ago I tried to explain the game to an American while watching a game in Bermuda without using any baseball analogies or comparisons. I didn't get anywhere and I'm sure we parted with him none the wiser.

Good idea, but if he's good at cricket I can spend my dotage relaxing in the sun in places like the West Indies, Australia and India. Now that would be cool. _________________ Be sad, be happy and be wise |

If someone had told me this time last year that Liverpool would be European Champions and we'd sign Peter Crouch to bolster our attack in preference to Michael Owen I'd have laughed loud and long. But now it has happened and anything is possible in the wide world of football, who knows what madness the next 12 months have in store.
Hew - did you see anything during his time at Villa to suggest that Crouch is worth 7 million? |

i was a bit upset when we sold him. I thought he was beginning to look like a very good player the last year he was with us. He has got a lot of skill and was a good finisher. I remember when he scored the winner for us at middlesbrough 2 years ago. That was ace. I think he'll do well for liverpool and make o'leary look like a twat for selling him. _________________ Martin O'Neill's Claret And Blue Army |

alright as i said above i think crouch is very good.
heres what graham taylor has to say:
"People say Liverpool will just play the long ball now. Well, when does a long pass become a long ball, I mean what are people talking about? Niall Quinn is a first-class example for Peter to follow. You can see the progression of his career and what he became, how he used his height and Peter could go the same way."
yes graham, when does a long pass become a long ball? You are a wanker. And the comparison to Quinn. What a tosser i apologize on behalf of Aston Villa that this man was once england manager. He almost sent us down a couple of years ago. He should fuck off and stop thinking he knows what is going on in football today. He spent two million on Mark Kinsella the prick and we wonder why villa have no money. When Taylor bought Crouch for us he had visions on Ian Ormandroyd and destroyed the poor lads confidence by thinking he was Niall Quinn. "Knock it long to Peter and he'll head it down for Platty to score" Oh fuck wait a minute platt ain't here anymore and i just signed mark kinsella. Graham Taylor is a twat. sorry but that bastard nearly destroyed my team. _________________ Martin O'Neill's Claret And Blue Army |

I dont' mind Graham Taylor, I've got a mate who's a Watford fan and he worships him although i think he was a bit pissed off when he retired after from the game and then came back to manage Villa. His record as England manager wasn't as bad as everyone makes out, he had the best start of any England manager ever.
I've just finished a book called 'The Beautiful Game' which has the rather pretentious subtitle of 'searching for the soul of football', but inspite of that its a brilliant book. it tries to reconcile how football overall can be richer than at any time in its history and yet half the clubs in the league have been in serious financial trouble over the past few years. i didn't realise how bad things were in the lower leagues, so many clubs get shafted by their owners. The recurring theme was outside investors coming into the club, appearing to be selflessly investing in the club but in fact recording all the money was going in as loans which they got paid back. At the same time they'd be paying themselves large salaries and doing crap things like 'buying' the grounds from the club and making the club pay rent to them for it. they'd then prompting fuck off at the first available opportunity they could while making a profit.
a couple of people who come out of the book well are Adam Crozier at the FA who apparently tried to stand up to the big clubs but was ultimately powerless and Gary and Phil's Dad Neville Neville who worked hard to save Bury. Also Graham Taylor was England manager at the time and he spoke out against the Premier League, one of the reasons for its creation was supposed to be to benefit the England team but he came out and said that this wasn't true and it was just a means to help the big clubs get more rich. Which has turned out to be true of course. |

That seems suspiciously like touting to me!
You wouldn't be allowed to ask that question on ebay! |

| how difficult is it to get tickets for Premiership games these days? I know it varies depending on the opponents, and I'm sure I haven't a hope in hell of getting into Anfield for the Man Utd game, but I'm hoping to go to some other game in the next few months (maybe the West Ham one) |

Dave, I've got a job interview in Manchester that night, otherwise i'd have taken it, £10 seems like decent value, the game is sold out isn't it.
After having time to think it through and reading this article...
http://liverpool.rivals.net/default.asp?sid=890&p=2&stid=8386158
..i've decided the the signing of Peter Crouch could be a good thing and I'm looking forward to the new season. |
