i'm going to japan in may (09may - 21may).
i just can't believe it.
16 hours or so in a plane...
i'm very excited about it.
it's the first time i will get out of europe and Japan sounds like another planet.
Has somebody already been there?
The Boo Radleys?
Toshi?
Want to tell me all the cool things i have to do/see over there?
For now, all i know is that i'll go to Tokyo but I intend to take the "national express" trough the country...
Tell me all i need to know. |

I've been Japan! Here's my 2 pieces of advice
DON'T! Play five-a-side football for 2 hours immediately after you've got off the plane. You will go very red, sweat more than is humanly possible and feel like you're going to die.
DO! Have an enigmatic and interesting relationship with Scarlett Johansson as Kevin Shields songs play in the background while you're there. |

well fur starters, there is nothing like eating real japanese food!
if you think the japanese food in Belgium is good, then you should try eating
real authentic japanese food from japan.

hi grumble!
traveling japan in may is the best choice, i think.
june is horrible. humidity is so high that you don't want to go outside and can't perform as much as you'd expect to. remember the world cup in 2002.
there must be some rail passes for visitors which make your trip around japan easier and reasonable(?). well it depends. check this out.

i admit kyoto is the most popular city for the tourists, like many typical guide books say. i've been there a couple of times and love there.
and you might see geisha girls strolling down the street.
i think you'll have much trouble to make yourself understood, feel lots of stress.
but take it easy. you're on earth unless you go to tokyo desney land.
many europians, africans and americans gather to roppongi area in tokyo to get some information about japan, where a lot of clubs and bars are,
but i'd rather recomend to go to akihabara, dig the town and see what's going on in this country.
i never paied attention to this eccentric culture till recently, but it could be the top of the fasion in a way.
i plan to come to tokyo just to see why?'s show(12th or 18th,may).
yes they're touring in japan. this can be the best thing to see around, i hope.
ask anything! maybe i can find some links much easier on the web.

thanks Toshi.
we've decided to stay in Tokyo and Kyoto and to make some one-day trips from there (to Nikko and other places i can't remember the name right now). There are plenty of places we'd like to visit but we only have 10 days and we don't want to rush.
Are you far away from Tokyo?? |

that's great!
i visited nikko many years ago for a school excursion.
but i can't remember what it's like actualy. too young to appreciate the old temples.
i live in the north-east of japan, 2 hours to tokyo by super express, 5 hours by bus (1/2 fare)
sure i'll take bus next time i go there, and won't stay long unfortunately.
keep in touch while you're in japan.
i'll try not to miss any posts of you. |

Cool.
How have you arranged it Grumble? Did you just get plane tickets and find some hotels and you're going to worry about the intercity train stuff when you're there? Or is it a more 'arranged' holiday? I -really- want to go to Japan! How much did you get flights for?
Toshi, is there another good time to visit, other than May? Maybe at the end of summer?

i think it's rather hot in tokyo at the end of summer, and tyhooon is possible.
but don't worry too much about it.
the weather is always abnormal for the past several years all around the world. |

I booked hotels via internet (I have a western room in tokyo and a japanese one in Kyoto: we will sleep on tatami and have a common bath. I don't know what that exactly means.... )
It's not more arranged than that. We'll buy rail passes (you have to buy it in your country of origin, i don't know why) and make some short trips from these two cities.
Flight costs me 850 euros. You have to book your flight quite soon to get "affordable" price. |
