i bought the best of collection of new order today
listening to it right now for the first time. i have only heard blue monday and here to stay by new order earlier, so i don't know what to expect.
ceremony - hmmm a good enough opener for the album. i'm not too pleased though
blue monday - bom dom bom dom bom dom bom dom bom dom bom dom bom dom bom dom. this sounds quite boring but somehow it's really cool and i like this. 7 mins 25 seconds!
confusion - some pretty cool lyrics and clever use of different instruments, but it's still quite a boring song.
thieves like us - hmmm not good but not bad either.
the perfect kiss - a bit better than the previous one but still not great
shellshock - i like this... sounds very much like pet shop boys actually.
bizarre love triangle (extended dance mix) - this sounds very much like pet shop boys too. but still so different... it's a good thing really.
true faith - this song is one of the reasons why i actually bought this album... hmmm it's the best song on the album so far! very much different than the boo's version which is really ace by the way, it's difficult to say if i like this more. but this is cool
touched by the hand of god (original 12") - weird but good enough. another 7 minute giant
round and round - okay
regret - hey i've heard this before! nice one
crystal - this one was supposed to be one of the hit songs of the collection, but well, it's good but not brilliant.
60 miles an hour - pretty good but it's nothing special
here to stay (radio edit) - another nice one
okay, this was the first time i listened to this one. i guess i'll have to give it another try. the booklet that comes with the cd sucks donkey balls by the way. the album sounds okay so far - and it was cheap |

Temptation is brilliant. My favourite New Order song i think
But how about World In Motion. Gascoigne, Waddle, Pearce..........David Platt and Tony Daley? Those were the days |

I don't know the best of cd, but new order is the, ehhh, how does one say, shit!
If you like them Pet Shop Boys, you should pick up copies of "Brotherhood" and "Low-Life" sometime from a used record shop (don't worry about it, Barney has enough money)
and try to get into Ceremony a bit, its a phenomenal song that was never recorded properly. _________________ "Even I know the solution: love, music, wine and revolution..." (magnetic fields)

New Order are legends! Whilst reading that post I too was going to say Temptation is the one. But if you can track them down you should also check out Your Silent Face and Age Of Consent. Magic! If you really like them save up and buy Retro - the 'Fan' disc is ace! |

Yeah and check out joy division, the seed (too small a word actually) from which the magnificent new order tree sprouted. |

Legends!!!!!
Perfect Kiss is the one for me, followed by Vanishing Point on 'Technique'
Nothing in this world
can touch the music that I heard
When I woke up this morning
It put the sun into my life
cut my heartbeat with a knife
It was like no other morning _________________ "fashioned by the blade of a world that doesn't care,

there's no "temptation" on this collection... im not sure if i even know the song. i thought that new order are okay, certainly not bad but nothing legendary either. well i've only listened to the cd twice now... i'll listen to it again when i come back from work.
i also bought the special version of the new suede album "new morning" yesterday... because it was damn cheap - only 4 pounds! at first i thought that it was good but after a couple of songs it was the same old suede again... that means quite boring i'm afraid. |

i've never quite beleived the New Order hype either to be honest... a smattering of fair to middling songs...
Joy Division though, pretty near perfect _________________ Scattershot Writing: www.jameseverington.blogspot.com |

shit, what happened to my memory? looks like we already had that discussion (and while we're at it, what happened to bev?).
anyway to anyone who has ceremony, age of consent, 1963, temptation and theives like us in their record collection go put them on right now (in that order).
ps i am also happy to big up simon and garfunkel to anyone who will listen, especially "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme" - an album whose lyrics border on poetry in much the same way that public enemy records have done since, and bob dylan records did before. and no, i'm not taking the piss with that - give it a listen! |

"Get Ready"
Shit or Shit Hot?
No idea why but I have a really bad feeling about the new album, which Hooky has described as "Technique-ey" in feel.
Technique is very very very close to my faveourite album of all time.

get ready is neither shit nor shit hot, but it's miles better than anyone could have expected. there are some great tracks on there, specially crystal, 60mph, the one with billy corgan at the beginning, and slow jam which contains some hilarious lyrics:
The afternoon was very clear
The sun was beating down on me
I got thirsty for a beer
Then I had to go to sea
The sea was very rough
It made me feel sick
But I like that kind of stuff
It beats arithmetic |

that's one of my favourite albums since i was a kid sparkly old girl. my dad had it (in fact it's his copy that i've still got). it is great and (hope i remember this right) 'a simple desultry phillipic (or how i was robert mcnamara'd into submission) is a top title for a song. 'homeward bound' was written on widnes station. 59th street bridge song is the greatest hippy song ever written ('hello lampost, how you doin'?) and scarborough fair/canticle sounds like the first slowdive e.p (if tripping on acid).
new order fucking rule - 'temptation' (i would buy 'substance' over a greatest hits, i think mainly 'cos i haven't liked anything since that much)
'temptation' by heaven 17 fucking rules as well
as does 'come live with me'
good to see a music thread back at last.

I think Substance might be my favourite album ever, its definitely the one I've listened to most. I bought it years ago after hearing World in Motion and still listen to it all the time even now.. |

hey that's great to hear i'm not the only one who appreciates that simon and garfunkel album, i have always wondered why i don't know anyone else who is into that, and i have also always thought "why are these guys not thought of as cool?". i suppose the answer to that can be found by doing a Google images search for them - there are some hilarious photos of them on their album sleeves where they look like that mulligan and o'hare off vic reeves and bob mortimer show.
and as for substance - that is one of the greatest. a few years ago i was asked by the club that i work at to submit a top five albums of all time to go on their website - all the djs had to do one - and i had substance second and giant steps first. how about that?
i do think those lists are impossible and also a bit pointless, though they can be fun. i like fun, and i also like pancakes which i currently eat every day. |
