Much as I love The Lips, and i really have for about ten years, I think Embryonic is an abomination. Very aptly named as it sounds like 18 half ideas in demo form. I'd have rather they spent another year or two and turned them into something special. _________________ "fashioned by the blade of a world that doesn't care,

So I take it you won't be buying the limited edition three disc 'furry' box set which includes the album in 'fuller form' as they had to edit the 18 tracks down for the single CD....?
Come on Kris it's only £39.99 and you can listen to all the songs you already hate, but for another half an hour.....!!
Seriously it's a grower...took me about 8 listens but I really love it now.... _________________ we spent a lot of time trying to make our guitars sound like trumpets...then someone told us we could actually use real trumpets |

In fact 'Embryonic' is fucking ace.
Not easy to get into but once you do it's full of lovely tuneful and challenging bleeps and drums and fuzzy bass noises, with nicely buried melodies.
In fact the album it reminds me of most is our very own bravcaptain's AFM.
The only downside is that I thought i'd sorted out my top 10 for the decade and now have to re-evaluate. _________________ we spent a lot of time trying to make our guitars sound like trumpets...then someone told us we could actually use real trumpets |

Yeah I really like Embryonic too - much better than the last proper one which I thought was a bit stale...
What did people think of the Christmas on Mars soundtrack/film by the Lips? _________________ Scattershot Writing: www.jameseverington.blogspot.com |

I haven't heard it yet...it's on my to do list!
However, I did buy "The Fearless Freaks" DVD and watched it last night. That was fantastic a proper documentary of the band.... tough (but good) upbringing, drugs, brothers all in and out of prison...and Wayne still lives "In the Ghetto" in Oklahoma (well he did in 2004)
The set for Christmas from Mars is in his back yard and constitutes lots of stuff he has scrounged from fields and building sites etc...he was trying to keep Steven off drugs for long enough to complete the project but had pretty much resigned himself at the time of filming that he (steven) was going to die...
Like I say fantastic stuff and the 2 disc set is £5.99 delivered from HMV.......as you can see i'm going through a Flaming Lips phase (again)
i remember Martin banging on about the lips when he was in The Boos in the 90's and I bought 'Transmissions from the Satellite Heart' and 'Clouds taste metallic' on his recommendation.... _________________ we spent a lot of time trying to make our guitars sound like trumpets...then someone told us we could actually use real trumpets |

Considering my experience of Flaming Lips only goes back as far as 'Soft Bulletin', 'Yoshimi' and 'At War..' I don't know how valid my opinion will be! Besides, I've had 'Zaireeka' and 'Christmas on Mars' on my shelf for a while and I've yet to even open either!
As for 'Embryonic', I'll agree it's a very challenging listen but there are definitely bits I've loved listening to as well as bits that have made me feel uncomfortable. I guess that's part of it's appeal, though: where it should go left, it goes right; and where it should go right, it goes diagonally backwards then punches you repeatedly in the balls and laughs in your face. I think it's brilliant. _________________ "It's too beautiful to stay inside..." |
