Super Furry Animals / Rings Around The World DVD
review by Tommy Boo
At first I have to warn you - this one will blow your mind.
I went to the local record shop today, found "
Rings Around The World
" and decided to give it a try. Then I came back home, put it on my DVD player and started to watch it. I was like hypnotized for the next three hours. This is simply amazing.
"
Rings Around The World
" is a truly mind-blowing audio-visual adventure. You can't get any more 'high' without having some real stuff - you will be so amazed that you will have to set an alarm on your watch to remind you to blink your eyes.
The opening track,
'Alternate Route To Vulcan Street'
isn't actually Super Furries at their best, but at least the video is quite... well... interesting!
'Sidewalk Serfer Girl'
is already much better and the video is stunning, one of my favourite one's on this DVD! The title song,
'Rings Around The World'
is already a classic tune that makes you smile, but it's a shame they didn't put the original music video on this DVD though.
The next song
'It's Not The End Of The World?'
is a complete opposite - listening to the lyrics (about the end of the world!) and watching the video full of nuclear explosions and mushroom clouds almost makes you want to cry and certainly makes you very thoughtful! But it's a beautiful song and I just love it.
'Receptacle For The Respectable'
comes next and oh god I've never seen a weirder music video! But it was really funny, just like
'Juxtaposed With U'
- I couldn't stop laughing! And they both were brilliant songs as well.
'Receptacle For The Respectable'
is a clever song with four parts, it starts as a simple 60's pop song, goes for a bit of glam rock and beautiful ballad in the middle, and then finally goes black metal!
'Touch Sensitive'
is probably the naughtiest video on this DVD... Well, you have to see it yourself!
'Presidential Suite'
is a clever little song,
'Run! Christian, Run
!' is not the best song but the video is interesting, and
'Fragile Happiness'
is a beautiful ending track. What a brilliant album!
If you haven't bought this gem already, and you have a chance to play DVDs, you absolutely MUST buy the DVD edition!
5 bonus tracks
and
16 remixes
, plus a lot of other bonus material.
5.1 Dolby Surround Sound
if you're into that technical stuff, cool menus and much more... How cool is that!
The bonus songs are all decent, and even though I've never been a big fan of remixes, I quite liked all the 16 of them here. [Brave Captain's remix of
'Fragile Happiness'
is also worth listening to!]
So, feed your cat, hire a babysitter, and start the mind-blowing tour to the wonderful world of Super Furry Animals!

The videos on the DVD are completely different though!
I've seen two different versions of "Rings Around The World" and "It's Not The End Of The World?" now... Maybe the others are different too??
But yeah, "Juxtaposed" is hilarious! _________________

The videos on the DVD were filmed by independent artists and close friends of the band, so I am led to believe. But the official promotion videos were excellent too:
The first official music video from this album was "Juxtaposed With U" with it's night-vision / infra-red theme, and is such a beautiful video that it brings a happy tear to me eyes whenever I see it. After that came "(Drawing) Rings Around The World" with the channel-hopping theme to amusing effect, and finally "It's Not The End Of The World" with the fantastic animation of the general-types quite literally "playing war".
And if you liked the DVD film for "Receptacle For The Respectable", look out for the band's new official video for "Hello Sunshine". Same animator, I think.
