| That’s really sad news, it wasn't mentioned in any of the papers. I saw him when he used to play for Tranmere. He was a decent striker who put loads of work in. But I too mostly remember him for having cool hair. |

This morning brought sad football news again. A true football legend and a gentleman passed away last night.
Wales and Leeds legend John Charles has died at the age of 72.
Charles, known during his playing career as 'the Gentle Giant', was admitted to hospital in January after feeling unwell prior to a guest appearance on an Italian television programme.
He underwent surgery following a blood clot on his leg and was then flown to England by Juventus' private jet before being transferred to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.
Charles scored 93 goals in 155 matches for Juventus and achieved the notable feat of never being booked or sent off throughout his career.
He also played for Roma and Cardiff, and was equally at home at centre-half or centre-forward, even though it was for his goalscoring which Charles found fame.
Awarded the CBE in 2001, he won 38 caps for Wales and scored 15 goals. He played in the last Wales team to qualify for the World Cup, when he starred at the 1958 finals.
He was a shining example for these modern day footballing primadonnas - unfortunately some chose not to follow it. He'll be sadly missed by all true football fans.
John, thanks for the Steve Cooper tribute article link - it was an interesting read. I hope that they hold a one minute silence for him in Barnsley today, but I don't think it's going to happen. The official club statement is that there will be a minute's silence at the end of the season, for the memory of everyone somehow related to the club who has passed away during this year. _________________

Premier League earlier today:
Chelsea
1 - 2
Arsenal
Eidur Gudjohnsen 1
Patrick Vieira 15
Edu 21
Manchester United
1 - 1
Leeds United
Paul Scholes 64
Alan Smith 67
Arsenal lead the Premier League by 7 points now, and they're still unbeaten! Although I've never been a big fan of Arsenal (never had anything against them either though!) I think they're simply the best team in England at the moment, they play beautiful attacking football and it's usually a pleasure to watch them. They deserve to win the Premier League this season.
Listening to Barnsley V Wycombe now...

Juventus paid for John Charles to be flown between hospitals by helicopter and I think they also paid for his medical treatment in the past few months. And Barnsley can't be even be arsed to spend a few seconds before a game remembering someone who played for the club nearly a hundred times, how crap is that?
And I like the idea of having a general minutes silence at the end of the season. Very efficient. |

| That last post was by John Mc by the way. As is this one. Who do we reckon is going to win Euro 2004 then? I reckon its going to be the Czech Republic if Baro's can stay fit until the end of the season. Nedved is an awesome player. |

Thanks for the link John Mc - very sweet piece. Nothing to add to it.
Euro 2004 - Czechs are normally tasty but I 'ope its Portugal 'cos they've always entertained and it'd be great to see 'em get their hands on such a trophy. |

Can't be arsed anymore. Maybe again some time in the future.
No more match results service (at least not for a couple of weeks) I'm afraid, I will post some other nonsense here though. Maybe. _________________

Still alive my Barnsley buddy! Life has been very busy of late, work has gone nuts and i've been trying to see Argyle as many times as I can before I go on holiday! Sturrocks departure left me numb, saddened and gutted for a whole day. Seeing him on tele representing another club bought a tear to my eye. But then ya saw Rupert Lowe and thought well atleast i haven't got to work for a posh David Brent, then you saw him holding up a scarf that even the most out of touch grans wouldn't have knitted and ya thought fuck it, he's welcome to it.
i opened a nice bottle of cider, toasted his health and got psyched up about the trip to notts county and how we would (as fans) put on a HUGE show of support. It was an immense emotional day that reminded you of why you follow your club. Its not to do with whether your 1st or 24th, its to do with your team, your city and the mates you grew up with standing alongside yer knowing that nothing, not even the departure of the finest Argyle manager since Warnock, is gonna change yer loyalties. It was a beautiful day and 0-0 did fine.
So whats the verdict on Paul Hart? Sadly i'm on holiday for our trip to Oakwell but his appointment means i'm more pessimistic about our chances of getting a result there! (Guess we should shift this to the football folder?!). |
So i've just shifted that posting here. Oh and thanks for the results service mr boo........ may you ressurect it when you feel able! |

OK, just couldn't resist this tonight.
Man United are out of the Champions League! A last minute equaliser by Porto and they win 2-3 on aggregate! Now I hope they lose against Arsenal in the FA Cup too.
Bad news for Setareh - Juventus lost at home against Deportivo La Coruna and are now out of the competition... 0-1 for Deportivo.
Chelsea also qualified for the quarter finals, 0-0 at home was enough for the London team tonight. (they won 1-0 on aggregate)
Lyon beat Real Sociedad 1-0 and won 2-1 on aggregate.
Premier League result:
Middlesbrough 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur
Division One:
Bradford City 2 - 0 Watford
West Ham 5 - 0 Wimbledon
Matthew Etherington 3 goals
More later... _________________
