Pete Libertine sounds like he's in a bad way right now. Addicted to crack and releasing middle of the road ballads. Is he destined to die young and be remembered in Athena posters for years to come or is it all just PR rubbish put out by Alan McGee?

Word on the street is he's in a really bad way -- even did some interview with the Sun, crack pipe in hand. Apparently he's fucking off to Thailand for a few weeks to sort his head out. Gee Pete, good thing you're going where there ain't no drugs at all. Bravo, dude.

Thailand? Perhaps he's been sent out there to do the due diligence tests on Shinawatra's bid for Liverpool.

The Libertines are good, their album is a bit patchy but all their singles have been great. I hope he sorts himself out.

Agree, the singles have been great while the album is patchy.

Live though they are the bollocks. I saw them supporting The Strokes when I'd never heard of them and they absolutely blew me away.

The 2nd time I saw them was at The Leadmill and it's just THE LOUDEST gig I've ever been to. I can still hear the speakers squealing undert the pressure. Shocked

Did anyone see My Bloody Valentine live? I was reading some of David Cavanagh's book about Creation the other day and that describes glasses smashing and people getting permanent hearing damage at their shows.

The Libertines are playing a free anti racism gig down in London in June (crack addiction permitting).

The Babyshambles single by pete doherty was rather good as well. Apparently the second album is finished so i can't wait for that. I agree that they are superb live. When i saw them it was without pete and they were still incredible.

It's a shame he's in a bad way & hope he can sort it out.

I'm afraid I don't rate "For Lovers". I don't think it's possible to make good music if you're totally fucked up.

Before you all shout, that's not saying good music can't be made under the influence of drugs, there's plenty of undeniable proof that it can. I'm saying that if you're utterly fucked up addicted to crack or whatever it just cannot happen. There has to be an element of control. See: The Happy Mondays last album fiasco for proof.

I hope he doesn't go the Athena (does that still exist?) poster route. As tragic as Kurt Cobain was, the circus that followed was/is dreadful. It's all been dragged up again this year, I'm sure that hasn't helped some of Courtney Love's recent problems. Let it lie.

It seems if you can survive success and come out the other side alive & in good health you're lucky. I'm thinking of Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Brian Jones, Bon Scott, Brian Wilson, Jim Morrison, John Bonham, Elvis, Janis Joplin, Nick Drake, Richey Edwards....

"I hope for your sake, you've got what it takes. To be spoiled to death."

Nick Drake had no success.

John Mc, I've seen MBV live on many occasions - the first being at the St Helens Citadel in 1988. They were fucking great, 'You Made Me Realise' had come out a couple of months before. Most of the songs were from 'Extacy' and a few from 'Isn't Anything' which wasn't out yet but we'd heard three songs from it on Peel earlier that week 'Feed Me With Your Kiss' is the one I remember, it was a lot faster than the album version. I asked Debbie for her set list afterwards which I still have somewhere.

We toured with them on the 'Loveless' tour. They were impossibly loud, people used to leave during 'you made me realise'. Its hard to describe just how loud they were. It hurt and it was powerful, not just turning everything up, which anyone can do. We went to see 'em in Manchester and Debbie and Belinda wore Boos shirts which made us happy.

I think the last time I saw them may have been the Rollercoaster tour in Sheffield. Can't remember too much about that one, we were on tour at the time and were probably 'under the doctor'.

You're right Martin. At least not before he died anyway.
I suppose I had him filed away in the "tragic circumstances" part of my brain.

There's a Faith No More lyric that goes:
And dying is dry -
Like a fact of history
And when you die, you'll become something worse
Than dead -
You'll become
A legend

I think it applies to all the people I mentioned. It's good that their legacy lives on through their music, but I do feel uncomfortable with the whole cult of.../ Athena poster thing.
