Just a note, Absolut is Swedish, not Finnish.
The reason their alcohol comsumption is increasing is apparently due to a changed laws (which I'm unsure of but they can buy more liquor these days when they go abroad).
Same thing is happening in Sweden. |
The same thing is happening in Sweden indeed in the near future I believe. Some Finns go to Estonia only to buy alcohol, because the boat trips are extremely cheap and so is the alcohol.

I think yes, Swedes generally look down a little on Finland but not nearly as much as towards Norway and Denmark. We have many Norway jokes.
Most Swedes just find Finland to be an odd, off, funny place. They are a special breed |
Wow, I never actually knew that. I don't have anything against Norwegians or Swedes or Danes and I'm always happy to see them do well in sports contests (except for when they're playing against us of course). Of course there are some silly Finns as well who still dislike Swedes and Russians for historical reasons, but that really is just stupid.

There is no rivalry from Sweden's point of view towards these countries because 'we' are already better...hehehe...(this is sometimes the air I can feel when people talk about these countries, I don't actually feel it myself). |
Well, that's something I've actually noticed as well - in Finland the Swedish speaking minority and Swedes think they're somehow better than the rest of us (which of course isn't true:roll:), but maybe that's heritage from 'the Great Swedish Empire'. Still, Swedes should realise that all that happened centuries ago and it would be better to forget all that.

But when Finland win in football it's a little okay because they're not that threatning. |
Well, I hope that those words will come back haunting you one day. Remember where Norwegian and even Swedish football still was not very long ago? I don't know that much about Swedish football to be honest, but still 10-15 years ago Norway was just as 'bad' as Finland is now. (we beat Greece 5-1, Portugal 4-1, Norway 3-0 not much before Euro 2004 though, so those are not that bad results)
Finland might be cold and not so beautiful (many people would disagree with that though) and our language is... well... different. (Finnish people have Asian roots actually unlike most of the other Europeans) But apart from missing all the bravecaptain tours, I must say that Finland is a pretty damn good country to live in! It's a little miracle that I'm not here speaking Russian or Swedish now, but that just makes it even more cool that we have our own unique language. Finland was quite a poor country still 50 years ago, living under Russia was shit and trying to live on our own (since 1917) was pretty hard, and the fact that Russians and Germans bombed our cities so that there was nothing left, didn't really help us.
I don't really know what happened in the 60's, did the whole other world fall asleep for 10 years or something, but ever since that we've taken giant steps forward, and 1-2 years ago Finland was chosen as the most technically advanced country in the world. Go Finland!
The summary of Finland's 20th century history ends here. _________________

Thanks for that, quite interesting
It's good to get a view of other countries from people who actually live there, rather than from books or the web or whatever.
It's also good to see that it's not just the UK that has a drink problem (or so we're told!) We have a global drink problem! Perhaps Dubya and Tony can sort that one out!
We have some friends who are truly globally altered, she's a Scouser, he's a Kiwi and they now live in Malawi. They actually came to our Wedding this year via Rhyl!!! A few years ago they had stayed with some people in Lapland. All they seemed to do was drink Vodka, so I don't suppose it's a new phenomenon. _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |

I guess old habits and superiority complexes die hard.
I'm sure Finland is not ugly, land of the lakes and all.

Swedish sounds nice spoken, but I think you need a harder-sounding language for proper rapping. I've heard some excellent stuff in Russian.
american rappers do need to drop the "uh, yeeeah" rubbish. it all started with that little bastard puff daddy. we used to have some credible rap, now it's gotten to the point that you can just throw on a zeppelin record and record yer bad self saying "uh ah yeah" over it. _________________ "Even I know the solution: love, music, wine and revolution..." Whoops! I've let the genie out of the box now haven't I! I had better explain....
Each nation has someone who is the butt of their jokes, so for the English it is the Irish; for the French it's the Belgians so I wondered if the Swedes looked upon the Finns like that. I believe the Irish have a particular County that is the butt of their jokes but I don't remember which one off hand. Perhaps you know.
That is not to say that this is how I look upon the Irish, or indeed the Belgians or Finns. No offence intended:D _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |

there is one county in Ireland that does get singled out, yes - Kerry.
but don't think the Irish don't have jokes about England as well |

Well Swedish is easier for the traveller - I gave up with Finish by the time i'd left the airport! But I prefer Finland as a place to visit.
Anyway back to Swedish rap, what about Stakka Bo "Here We Go Again" -Absolute gem of a pop record!
Woooooooooo here we GO GO GO with total dedication
Or something.
One of my old landladys played my copy of that about 20 times one visit and i still never tired of it! A great record to chop trees too!
Hooray for rap! Hooray for pop! |
