i loved the milk. i can still taste it. it was dead creamy and warm. would hate it now. that awful, awful woman stole it from us. our bonus in sister liolas class was the chance to sit on this manky rug and read 'lizards and salamanders' this would have been 1975. i was probably reading neitzche and in a glam yob band. i can't remember, i was full o' free milk.

So Jamie Oliver is doing it for the kids eh? On Super Size Me there's a bit about school meals where they say its just as cheap to give kids decent food as the rubbish they serve now.
My current hero is Jamie Carragher |

"take no heroes, take only inspiration"
I mentioned on the book thread that I've been reading Kathy Reichs's crime thrillers. They are loosely based on her own career as a forensic anthropologist in Canada and the US but she has also done work uncovering mass graves in Guatemala and worked at Ground Zero in New York (that's just a very brief summary of her work!).
so I'd like to nominate anyone who works in human rights areas as the modern heroes to take inspiration from, some of whom do their work at risk to their own lives but do it anyway because they care. |

what is it, Turkey Twizlers, that Jamie Oliver got kicked off the school dinner menu?
Sales of them have trebled in the UK since that.
nice work, Jamie O! |

Ah Christ, Jamie Oliver? So Bono gets lambasted on this board for doing stuff for charity and Oliver who MAKES A TV SERIES OUT OF IT doesn't?
He's already said that he won't get involved in actually helping the government work out alternatives, or economics, or organisation, or talk to any of the lower down civil servents who will organise any change because he's "too busy" or anything really. I'm sure he means well, but a hero? No, the heroes are the unsung people who actually sort the things out. _________________ Scattershot Writing: www.jameseverington.blogspot.com |

Hey Bev I think me and you have quibbled a similar point before (tsunami gig)
I don't particularly like Jamie Oliver but I respect the fact that he has done what he can to prove his point.
He has shown that if you feed kids good food they no longer need inhalers. The government can't argue with that now.
But yeah he will probably release a book about his experiences
I'm with you on your regular people point.Plus I think Nora the dinner lady deserves as much praise as Jamie
I have a problem with people like Bono who expect countries and governments to share their resources when Bono himself has huge amounts of world resources stashed in his bank account.
Imagine it was grain or water providing resources he had stockpiled, and then imagine him trawling around the world begging people to wipe out debt.
Its hypocritical.
You can't reap the rewards of capitalism and then demand the aspects of capitalism that cause you displeasure to be wiped out without expecting some flack for it.
And don't start me on Bob Geldof

Oliver is as bad as Bono mate, he just hasn't had as much of a head start as yet... He started shouting but in 2 years time he'll be back to releasing £25 books. To be fair to Bono, he's a wanker who does seem to have stuck to his guns so far... _________________ Scattershot Writing: www.jameseverington.blogspot.com |

I believe I was the person trying to stick up for Bonio at the time, so I'll do the same for Jamie O this time around.
The fact is Jamie owns a swanky restaurant, is already a millionaire, and could do TV programs and write cook books for the rest of his days is peace and luxury. You seem to think that making money is some kind of criminal activity.
Yes I found all the "at home with the Olivers" stuff irritating and self-serving, but at the end of the day, the program has (hopefully) kickstarted a move in a good direction for our kids. Jamie Oliver didn't have to spend a year of his life on this project, and I think his passion throughout the series was indisputable.
It's wierd on here. It seems that any famous person that does charity work or anything for a good cause, seems ripe for a kicking. If anyone wishes to call me naive, well good, cos at least that means I'm not cynical.

| it doesn't really matter what motives someone has for doing something if it works out for the common good. you need ego to do good things but there can be side effects. like yr tongue swelling so you sound ridiculous. |
