Just finished watching the Paralympics opening ceremonies. I don't know why I bothered actually, I'm not usually that kind of a person who watches opening ceremonies. In fact I didn't even know that the Paralympics start tonight.
Anyway, I really really do appreciate those handicapped athletes who take part in the Paralympics. Much more than most of the doped overpaid losers in the Olympic Games. (I'm not saying that every athlete in the Olympic Games is doped or overpaid, but since some of them are, it's quite pointless watching them. I didn't watch the Olympics at all.) Watching Paralympics makes me smile, all the competitors are winners in the end. And most of them probably do this for fun and not just for money that is the plague of most of modern sports.
Some of the events are quite amazing too... How on earth do blind people play football? What is
goalball
? And how's it possible that someone who's 63 is in the Finnish wheelchair volleyball team? Awesome. Watching Paralympics can be really interesting sometimes!
I only saw a couple of events of the previous Paralympics, but I liked what I saw. The athletes were genuinely happy if they did well, and I can't remember anyone doing anything unsportsman-like. (is that a real word?)
Some of the competitors aren't even there to win obviously - well, I'm sure they do their best, but I remember this one swimming bloke in the previous Paralympics who was too weak to finish the race. Still, he didn't give up until some people came to get him up from the pool! And gotta appreciate blind footballers who are better players than I am (which isn't very much obviously, but I'm not blind!)... wheelchair tennis players... wheelchair rugby (eek!)... loads of interesting stuff!
I hope that they broadcast more events than they did last time!
Go Paralympics!

I once watched 5 minutes of some Rugby final in England (I was really bored). The referee stopped the game at least 20 times during that time. As soon as he blew his whistle again and the game went on, all the players ran at the one who has the ball and jumped on him, and then the referee blew the whistle again. What a stupid game.
I might have to disagree with you about the wheelchair rugby though, it could be quite cool actually. Or perhaps not, I don't know. _________________
