What about the cliched ones:
100 Club, The Marquee, Hammersmith Odeon (or whatever it's called), Waterloo station (as in sunset),
Actually, I know fuck all about London and I expect you've got them so I'll get my coat..... _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |

I can think of a few songs that mention bits of London: I Don't Want To Go To Chelsea by Elvis Costello, Dagenham Dave by Morrissey, For Tomorrow by Blur has lines about the Westway and Primrose Hill, there's a song on the new Libertines album about being trendy in Clapham or something, East 17 had an album called Walthamstow and the Boo's mention the Good Mixer in one of the songs on Wake Up.
The nearest I got to living a rock and roll life in London was standing next to James Dean Bradfield at the bar at the Social once. I considered hugging him and telling him how much I liked the Manics but even in my drunken state I realised that wouldn't have been a cool thing to do. So I maintained a dignified silence but from the way I ordered my drink I think he could tell that I loved "The Holy Bible" but have been disappointed by some of there more recent work. |

My top London rock'n'roll place is Bar Italia in Soho (as in the Pulp song on 'Different Class'), it's always really full though even at 4 in the morning so you can't actually get a seat. People go there after a night out to drink coffee and wait for the sun to come up. Cool.
There's probably a Blue Room in Archway somewhere too of course... _________________ http://www.facebook.com/thelostcavalry

I'm the Cosmic Ted, spaced out of my head"

Oooh yes.
Also,
I AIN'T HAD NO FUN IN LONDON
SINCE THE HAMMERSMITH PALAIS
NEW YORK CITY'S BORING
SINCE THE PUNKS ALL WENT AWAY
TOKYO'S GONE TECHNO
AND BERLIN'S GOING CRAZY
I AIN'T HAD NO FUN SINCE HAMMERSMITH PALAIS
You might not know that one though...
(so I could put that on your CD then) _________________

"The day they knocked down the Palais
My sister stood and cried.
The day they knocked down the Palais
Part of my childhood died, just died.
Now I'm grown up and playing in a band,
And there's a car park where the Palais used to stand.
My sister's married and she lives on an estate.
Her daughters go out, now it's her turn to wait.
She knows they get away with things she never could,
But if I asked her I wonder if she would,
Come dancing,
Just like the Palais on a Saturday.
And all her friends will come dancing
Where the big bands used to play."
The Kinks.
First single I ever owned, that. _________________ http://www.facebook.com/thelostcavalry

berwick street for the quality of record shops, the soho endurnace with its excellent jukebox and some bar on it that i first heard underworlds dark and long in....... However even this west country lad knows all the best bands hail from the north west of england so yer really should look for rocknroll landmarks up there instead! |
