The more I live the more I feel my life is being wasted. Ever get that feeling?

This is quite a serious post by the way. My mate just sold his house and is going around the world, whereas I feel like selling my house and joining Greenpeace or Oxfam.

Is there anyway to do both? I doubt it.

whatever makes u happy......i try to do things that would make me happy, but trouble finds me everytime....i am the worst when it comes to having any luck or so it seems that way.......everywhere i go, a dark cloud hovers over me.....just when i least suspect it, something bad happens, or when i start to feel good something bad happens. if i were to become a gambler, there's no doubt i'd be the worst gambler.

Take it from someone with experience from organisations that mean well, at least to begin with.

Think long and hard before you join any organisation. Even though one is meant to live to help people, one is meant to help oneself as well.

I can explain more if you want.

Love & Peace

A friend of mine is taking a month off work to help out in an orphanage in Sri Lanka. She is actually not sure where it will lead later but it's something that she feels she needs to do. There is a chance she might not come back, I think her current job is not fulfilling enough and is hoping for a life changing experience to help her make some choices.

Maybe you should have a look at doing something like that, it could lead to other paths, you never know who you might meet along the way.

Sarah I know what you mean, but a lot of people find personal fulfillment in helping others, thats not meant to sound patronising cause christ knows if i were in a position to be patronising i probably would be, but Ive worked for NGO's and social movements and I know theres less money (well none) in working at the grassroots than there is working in the offices of a large NGO, but theres a whole lot more, I dont want to sound to hippified but i guess good feeling from working with people and not just on their behalf. And personally they both feel a lot better than working to make somebody else money. I guess it depends on your lifestyle tastes, personally I need a stereo and but not a car, some people need the car but not the house, others need etc etc.

Dude if I were you Id give it a shot and if its not for you, then you can go back to your career.

Thanks Guesty.

My biggest dilemma is that I'm already stuck in the career / mortgage / car / career / mortgage / car / career lifestycle.

In order to "give it a go", I'm basically going to have to sell the house and live on the proceeds for a few years, and probably lose my girlfriend at the same time, coming back to normality would then set me back about 15 years financially. I fucking hate dependance on money Twisted Evil

I should have done this when I was 20 really, but now it's a much bigger upheaval than it could have been.

Thanks for all the comments though people Razz

practical solution:

(1) remortgage the house to raise a bit of extra cash - maybe get a better deal so you don't even end up paying any more in the long term but have £5k in your pocket.

(2) sign the house over to a letting agency for 2 years or whatever and they will manage it for you and pay the rent directly to you which will cover the mortage payments.

(3) nob off to uganda or wherever.

(4) keep us posted on what's it's like over there!

ps as you rightly point out, the bird might not be too happy esp if she's not invited. maybe ring her from the airport as you're leaving and tell her she has 24 hours to move out before the tennants arrive. crack on there is bad reception and the line is cutting out and you're laughing.

the thing is that you can probably do some of the things you're considering. I'm with Sparky on the flat business, having your own property is an asset and not to be lightly cast off - let yours while your abroad and letting will offer you an income of some sort. it's unlikely that you'll be gone for life and you'll want something to come back to. as far as the girlf, well Sparky yr heartless. of course you're likely to lose her, Kinkster, a long distance relationship is very hard to maintain and very unsatisfactory, plus let's face it, you're likely to meet someone in your new life that's more in tune with what you want.

at the risk of sounding corny, you need a piece of paper and pencil - write down 2 columns of reasons 'for' and 'against' and then see how things balance. perhaps what you need to do is get more information about what your options are for the work you're considering, then the decision will be clearer.

good luck!

Laughing

The decision has been made. I basically going nowhere without the missus, I may be in a rut where all my possessions mean fuck all to me, but G is the centre of my world who I can't live without. She has said that she too wants to do something like this, though I believe her angle is coming more from a Greenpeace side than an Human Rights side.

Going to have to put this idea on ice for a couple of years so we are both in a position to walk straight back into the shitty 9-5. In the meantime however, I've started looking for work with more flexible hours / holidays, so I may be able to grab a week here and there helping where I can.

Thanks a million for the feedback everyone, it's given me a lot to think about Smile
