I listened to wake up today.
I never realised how negative some of the songs are. But I can really relate to some of the lyrics of songs like "Stuck On Amber" and "Twinside".
Theres also some of my fave Carr lyrics on that album inc.
"Don't go with the flow, try follow your own path" &
"..and I know what you wan't, to take my life having served you. But I might as well go, 'cause you need me more than I do"
For some reason these lyrics really mean something to me at the moment.
I also seem to be crying to Wilder a lot recently. It's really touching.
that's it

When I was a whole lot younger and stupid, I thought that It's Lulu must be the happiest song in the world. Then I learned some more English and realised that it's actually quite a sad song.
I like it. Wake Up is a magnificent album... well, just like the other Boo albums really. _________________

"But you can't blame me, not for the death of Summer, but your gonna say, what you wanna say, you have to put the death in everything"
It's the summer poptastic sunshine song!!

When Wake Up came out, I had to wonder if "Maybe it's brighter down there, Maybe it's Wilder..."
It wasn't. It was bloody awful.
It's OK now.
An old Chinese thing:
One day a man asked Confucious why bad things must happen in the world. Confucious took the man and showed him a small pool. In it were 3 fish which had grown so big they couldn't even turn round. He told the man that he would have his answer tomorrow. That night there was a terrible storm, it flooded homes and destroyed crops.
The next morning Confucious took the man to the pool.
The fish were gone.

If it wasn't for these words, I wouldn't have a job, or a PC to type this.
Quality. When I hear lyrics like that I wonder why I didn't write them, because it seems to portray exactly how I feel.
Then I realise, that's exactly why it has Quality. I couldn't write them - Martin had to. _________________ Find a job you like, and add five days to every week. |

Wilder and Stuck on Amber are king shit on a stick. first boos songs i bothered to pluck out on the geetar. also cause the stuff from c'mon kids i could never figure out by ear.
Isn't "Kiss Me Kiss Me" a terrific thing? it punches you in the face, and then keeps poking at the bruises for weeks! BUT GUARANTEED ROBERT SMITH WEARS BUNNY SLIPPERS! _________________ "Even I know the solution: love, music, wine and revolution..." (magnetic fields)

Kiss Me... is fantastic. A band at the top of their game, they've never touched it since. After Disintegration they became patchy, although Bloodflowers was a bit of a return to form. Just Like Heaven is one of the best things ever written. Heard Dinosaur Jr's version?
For utter despair, you can't beat Faith and whilst Disintegration loses it's way in places, that middle section from Lullaby to The Same Deep Water As You is genius. Also Fear of Ghosts which was a B-Side to something off that album, darkest hour or what?
Actually on the subject of B sides and Bunny Slippers - Sugar Girl! Such a sad song, but sort of a comfortable melancholy wistfulness rather than out and out despair. _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |

Listening to Wake Up! Right now. I'd forgotten just how much I love this album.
I bought it on the same day I got The Bends by Radiohead. I've not listened to that for 6 or 7 years and I couldn't care less. Yet, whenever I hear, "Martin, Doom!", or "Stuck On Amber" I find myself 18 years old all over again and laughing, crying, singing and being so full of love and warmth. When I was 18 this album meant everything to me and almost 11 years on, I find it still does.
No other songwriter has ever been able connect so directly with me and for that I will forever love and be thankful for the beautiful creation that is Martin Carr.

WAKE UP! is probably my least favourite Boos album. But it's still ace! _________________ we spent a lot of time trying to make our guitars sound like trumpets...then someone told us we could actually use real trumpets |

Great, underrated album. The equal of Kingsize and half a point behind Giant Steps I suppose.
For a exceptionally pleasurable if anal (!?) experiance, play the odd numbered tracks first and then the even numbers. Not only does it split-up the sequence of tracks from Martin Doom through to Twinside, which IMHO doesn't really work - though I love them all individually, even Twinside: "the camp one."
Dare I suggest that this order has more narrative sense....
yeah, yeah. I know; it's just a collection of songs.
