Today my favourite little record shop in the town had to close it doors for good (sniff sniff), and I finally bought this CD I've been thinking of buying for ages.

"What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?" by Echo & The Bunnymen.

It had been there for three months at least, and now I'm glad that no one bought it before me. I listened to it as soon as I got back home, and I think I really like it. It's one of those albums that you like immediately... I'm not sure if that's good or bad though, but so far it sounds excellent!
So, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me more about the band... I think someone mentioned them here not very long time ago.
Where are they from? For how long they've been around? (for quite a while I suppose!) And are the other albums any good?

Now I regret that I didn't buy this a long time ago, but better late than never, eh?
I also bought the best of album by Small Faces, some Van Morrison and some Charlatans album that has the worst fucking album cover ever . (I think it's called "Tellin' Stories" and I honestly think that it's bloody awful) I don't even know why I bought it actually, I wasn't too impressed with "Wonderland". Oh well.

Idea

They are from Liverpool.
When I was a kid they were the greatest band in the world.
'Ocean Rain' is wonderful. 'Killing Moon' is one of my favourite songs ever.
Ian Mac is an amazing singer.
Their first single was in 1979, they split up in the late eighties and got back together a few years ago.
Their drummer, Pete DeFreitas was killed in 1989, we played the Pink Parrot on Seel Street in Liverpool that night.
Mac and Will formed a band called Electrafixion who supported the Boo's on a UK tour in 1996 (I think).
You should buy 'Songs To Learn And Sing', their hits album from 1985. A truly great singles band.

Cheers Martin.
Nice, another top band from Liverpool then.
Can you remember how many albums they've released since the 1985 greatest hits one then? This new stuff probably sounds much different than their old songs.

Who's Echo? Is he the one who looks worryingly much like the other guy in Tears For Fears?

I made a quick search for Echo & The Bunnymen on eBay... I couldn't find the greatest hits album yet (the only ones for sale were in the USA) but I found "Ocean Rain". I can't wait to hear their other albums really, it's been a while since I last liked any album so much on the first listen, and "What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?" is definitely growing on me.

Echo & The Bunnymen probably is one of the best band names ever too. Well, at least I like it.

Echo was the name of the drum machine they used in early gigs before Pete (RIP) joined the band.

The remaining members got back together in 1997 releasing the beautiful single 'Nothing Lasts Forever' and so-so album 'Evergreen'. Since then they've released 2 more albums... though I can't comment as I ain't got them.

Pure Class.

My ex reckoned I looked like Mac when I was much younger. He had the coolest hair and a sexy pout. Obviously lost with the ravages of time (by me at least, he still has it) which may explain a lot in retrospect. Another story.....

sice used to have his hair like mac's when we were sixteen/seventeen. he reckoned that all the spray and sticky shit he put in it contributed significantly to it's disappearance later on.

i loved 'nothing ever lasts forever' as well tho' i've not heard any of the later albums. i think only one album came out post 'songs' and pre comeback. self titled and poorly reviewed, it had some good stuff on like the first single 'the game' which is beautiful.

'A sense of duty
was my one intention
and an ugly beauty
was my own invention
Pride a proud refusal
and I refuse
to need your approval
Too many seekers
Too few beacons
But through the fog
we'll keep on beaming'

'Mac the mouth', 'the liverpool lip', his interviews in the eighties were hilarious. i remember one where he is saying that weller looks like one of those divvy kids at school who sat at the back and threw rubbers at the other kids. something like that.

I've got a friend from school who's currently living in Tokyo. At the end of last year he was in a Sports Bar over there watching a Liverpool match and he got talking to some fellow Brits who he was sure he recognised from somewhere but he couldn't quite place them. He thought they had gone to the same school as us. He eventually found out that it was Ian Mc and the Bunnymen and apparently he's a very nice guy and supremely cool. He gave my friend 2 tickets to their concert the following day, backstage passes and took him out on the piss afterwards. Thats how rock stars should behave.

The album that has 'nothing lasts forever' is called 'evergreen' and i believe it was their first 'comeback album'. Its got some pretty nice songs on there and is worth checking out in my opinion. I saw them in about 1997 i think and the longpigs opened. Good gig.

Late 95 I think..... off the top of my head I saw them support you at The Sheffield Octagon...... think it was October or November ....... ish. I bought an Electrafixion single and it was pretty damn good. The name excapes me now though.

Oh yeah and I though "What Are You Going To Do With Your Life" is hugely underrated. A great great album if ever so slightly samey.

What Are You Going To Do With Your Life? is one of the best albums I've bought this year, if not the best. I really like it, although you're right about the fact that some of the songs sound a bit similar.
The title track itself is amazing, I love it.
Rust is a bit boring, but the refrain is nice.
Get In The Car is a nice summery song, with trumpets and everything. A bit like Boo Radleys 1995 in my opinion.
Baby Rain is probably the worst track on the album, it's not too bad either, but the 'la la la la la' in the end goes on for much too long.
History Chimes reminds me of Wilder by the good old Boo's, which is a really good thing of course. A very beautiful piano ballad with beautiful lyrics, I love this one.
Lost On You is a bit faster again, and I like it too. I remember listening to this half asleep for the first time, and this song kind of woke me up and got me interested.
Morning Sun ... this sounds very much like some of the other tracks on the album, so if you listen to the album as a whole, you'll probably find this song a bit boring when you get this far.
When It All Blows Over , here's another excellent track then. The chorus could be a bit more exciting perhaps, but this sounds very much like a Beatles song which is great of course.
And then to the final track, Fools Like Us . If I didn't know that this is a Echo & The Bunnymen song, I would guess that it's The Inspiral Carpets. (an excellent live band, not the best 'studio band' though). A great ending track for quite a melancholious album.

A great album, don't know how to compare this to the older ones because I haven't heard them yet, but I could suggest this for everyone anyway.

Tommy Boo likes.

The Bunnymen's first four albums are well worth investing in, Heaven Up Here is my fave.

The decline of Mac the mouth is a sad one, there's some worrying tales doing the Liverpool muso rounds over the last few years. Let's hope he gets his act together.

I heard the footy song they did with The Spice Girls, Space and Ocean Colour Scene the other day.

What the fuck were they thinking?!

BUMP!

OK, so I bought "Ocean Rain" by the Bunnymen during my trip to England. It's a 25th Anniversary special edition so there are some bonus tracks on it too, and I got it for very cheap so it was a real bargain. I've listened to it a couple of times now and I like it. 'The Killing Moon' is a brilliant brilliant song, just like someone said. Most of the other songs are good too, but there are some a bit boring ones too.
Still, it's a very good album, I'm trying to find some other Bunnymen albums now.

Tommy BOO, don't think for a second that The Boo Radleys drove them to do that type of stuff. It was bands like Echo & The Bunnymen & The Inner City Unit to start about the neo-psychedelic era & industrialise the music industry with their ska-like songs back in the late 70's & early 80's.
