Here's the Public Enemy article which was in the Observer on Sunday:

It's make their current situation sound a bit sad, playing to half empty venues, I didn't even realised they'd played in Britain recently. |

Do they still cut the mustard live? They were incendiary in their early years, but some of their later work was a bit oh-oh, and flava flav and chuck d didn't do themselves much favours by their choice of TV appearances (Flava in the surreal life for instance, and Chuck-D as a news reporter). I reckon though taht history will be kinder to them than most of the current hip hop crop. The thing about Public Enemy is that they have dated in a way that artists like Dr.Dre somehow avoided. I guess it's the fate of many bands. De La Soul would probably find themselves playing to half-empty venues too. Still kick the pants off those beastie boys though! _________________ www.myspace.com/storkboychoons

My earliest memories of PE are been driven around the country lanes of Devon and a friend putting on one of their albums (must have been around '89). Yeah, not quite the mean streets of the Bronx or Harlem!
It just sounded like nothing else, all wailing sirens, dead hard and though I liked it I was too much of an indie kid and too skint to investigate further.
So I got the best of CD and it doesn't sound as incendiary as it once did (or i imagined it did). But, yeah, it's fuckin' great.
The sad thing is I played it to a couple of mates who are into Jay-Z and 50cent and all that stuff with samples by the police and other dull 80's bands... and they couldn't stand it and didn't get it. PAH!
Such is the fate for PE _________________ Be sad, be happy and be wise |
