Words cannot describe it, but I'll try to with the following:

I'm so glad I didn't buy it!

I like it. I also really, really like the Manics new single. It fills the pomp rock shaped hole in my heart.

I thought the new A.Monkeys one was supposed to be pretty much the same as the last?

I haven't heard the new Manics one yet - I am hoping it is better than the stuff from Lifeblood!

Neon Bible really is amazingly average isn't it?

It's like many many other chart bands of the last few years, all of whom's follow-ups seem to be hailed as improved works of astounding greatness. Razorlight, Kasabian, Muse, Arcade Fire, Killers. Every single one of them has been average at best and god-awful at the worst (*cough* Kasabian *cough*).

"Whatever you say I am.." really grew on me. I loved it after a month then discarded it after two. This album however, I've not managed to make it all the way through in one listen, such is the grinding monotony.......

IMO of course!

I haven't heard it but I'd say your probably right, just on the basis of the sycophantic reviews which are enough to put me off. give the time though they may be alright, but they aint no new morriseys or marrs

I did think that a week down the line it would have grown on me and I'd be doing yet another bc board U-turn, but..... nope, I've still not made it through in one listen.

I do seem to have this mental block with second albums. I've loved lot's of bands debut's this decade so far only to be completely apathetic to their follow-ups. Bloc Party is the only one I have liked recently, but then, I didn't like 'Silent Alarm' so maybe I can't compare.

Can anyone name any GREAT GREAT second albums?

It Takes A Nation Of Millions...
A Grand Don't Come For Free
Sound of Silver
Nevermind
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Thems is all great second albums. I think reviewers are scared to give big seconds albums bad reviews. In that book about Creation David Cavanagh goes about about the hassle he got for only giving What's The Story... 3/5 in Q after it went on to sell billions of copies so it's probably easier for reviewers to write positive reviews rather than negative ones.

For the next three weeks I don't care about anything, we're going to Athens! I watched the game at a pub in London where Liverpool fans sang songs about Liverpool and the only songs the Chelsea fans sung were about Hillsborough. I'd like to think there's some sort of karma involved that we got through but when you've got the cool penalty taking skills of Bolo Zenden you don't need karma.

Radiator
Dog Man Star
100 Broken Windows (if you don't count Captain as an album)
Pinkerton
Siamese Dream

Those are the ones that spring instantly to mind. A friend of mine has let me borrow his copy of Favourite Worst Nightmare so I'll give that a listen later.
