Following on from the Brave Captains Bills Blues thread:
There have been a couple of ideas posted so far as toward a way of helping funding of BC or indeed any Artist get there stuff recorded and distributed.
Please use this thread to post any ideas you have as to how we can revolutionise the record industry!!

Didn’t Sique Sique Sputnik selling advertising space between the tracks on their album? Maybe that’s the way forward….perhaps not.
I reckon some of subscription part of the website would be the way forward. You said that you’re keen on the idea of asking for something in return and I know what you’re getting at but realistically most people won’t just hand over money for nothing. If the Brave Captain website charged £5 a month and every month there was a new track to download or a Q&A session with Martin or stuff like the Giant Steps retrospective then I reckon you’d get 50 or so people signing up at least. To be honest I’m guessing. But that email about the I Am A Lion lyrics said there had been 700 downloads so far so there must be some interest out there. |

True, true...... This is actually a very good idea. Not sure it could get implemented, but it is a better solution than just purely asking people to donate. Still dont like the idea of Martin working hard to hit a deadline and deliver a track to the site though.... he might as well be doing a 9-5

OK, Idea number 2 for a record company.
Do you think people would be willing to give £1 a month towards a record company where they are automatically given shares?
With that money we then get artists to send in demos, have a couple downloadable, and the shareholders get to choose who gets a record made?
Hey, if you think it sucks say so, I'm just trying hard and this is early for me ok?

These days I almost think the name record company is a bit antiquated. After all, there really aren't even records made anymore! The idea of a "album" is also kind of archiaic (sp?), after all, a forty-five minute album is based off of what a vinyl could hold. And for us song writers (or at least me), what # of songs we write in a period is rather sporatic. So why stretch the tunes we write to meet that period, or limit it and store thos other songs away as b-sides or saves for the "collectors box sets" when we're old and grey?
As a listener of music, I've developed into a singular fan; a band or artist may make only one ace song (in my opinion) and the other 19 songs in their catalog of songs are shite. Since I became a mass consumer of music (listen to music nearly all waking hours), I developed a more broader taste in music. Thus, I had more songs and stlyes and tastes to fit into a fixed period of time, casusing me to raise my standards of music. I honestly rarely find an "album" of tunes where a majority of the songs could make it worthy to bump out time listening to "Hoedown" by Copeland or a number of Brave Captain tunes.
Then I turn on the radio, and here (in Wisconsin) your choices are: 1 Classical/ 3 80's, 90's today pop/1 current hits/2 hard-alt. rock/4 country/1 50's & 60's hits/ and then classic rock, feat. Dylan Hendrix, and all the "greats"
Is it like that in the UK? So where is one to turn to broaden their horizons? After all, there is only so many 80's tunes that can remain in rotation when the current hit has to be played 3 times in 2 hours...
Any one got a solution in mind? Sampler cds, pick n' choose albums? Or should we gamble our 12 bucks on a cd because we like one song we heard in a movie?
Big questions for a minor problem |

I'll work with you if you get some straight ideas. Not like I have much better to do. I can't actually disclose my "big idea" until i get some cash to fund it (read: distant future, ~5 years). But I
am
(still) working on a user-driven pro-democracy site/webzine/database thing. I'm a strong believer that any alternative to the corporate music industry relies on this type of work. Basically you've got to decide, "fuck it, I'm going to go out on my own and actively seek out interesting, fun, challenging, and above all relevant music." And you've got to create alternate means of advocacy distribution and communication. _________________ "Even I know the solution: love, music, wine and revolution..." (magnetic fields)

I don't know why, cos I been quit aaaaaaaaaages, but the last fortnight i have had cravings for a cigarette like you WOULD NOT BELIEVE!!
So who'd be interested in building a Record Company and having shares in it, for less than 25p a week?

That sounds like an interesting idea and I'd love to help you somehow. If you need any help (other than financial), that is... _________________
