sorry, I've lost track of the film thread!

the review I heard of The Manchurian Candidate on radio 4 said it was flawed but worth seeing for Meryl Streep's performance.

Although it's based on the 1962 film and book, it has been updated from old fashioned brainwashing to surgically implanted thingys that control behavour patterns which turn an unpopular, unpleasant man into a popular candidate for the Vice Presidency of the US.

anyway, long story short, the film is pretty intense for most of the time, a little long but the acting is excellent, particularly the character who's been implanted, I hadn't heard of the actor before. Denzel Washington doesn't seem to vary that much but the part suits his usual persona quite well, if a little more desperate than I'm used to seeing him. There are some red herrings along the way (of course!) and the scene where the soldiers are being brainwashed it quite awful, I was crossing my legs and trying to sink down in my seat!!

I'd recommend it if you like political thrillers at all, but be prepared to concentrate...judging by the smell of dope that wafted over the cinema half way through, some youngsters who'd left their seats were finding it a little hard going and went for a break!!

I was going to see this but I ended up going to see SAW instead, which I don't regret at all. Absolutely amazing.
