quite liked New York in a "decent but not quite The Verve kind of way". And I really like "Song For The Lovers".

That's about it.

I have to admit I've fell completely out of love with this kind of music in the last few years though.

No.
I even think Urban Hymns was more of a solo effort and not a patch on A Northern Soul.
I followed Verve right from Gravity Grave and preferred the sprawling guitar epics (She's A Superstar is awesome, and the B side Feel is a trip tp the other side of Saturn!) or the cathartic stuff on Northern Soul. No Knock At My Door, So It Goes and the title track being the highlights.

The solo stuff isn't exactly bad, just disappointing.

I'd have to go with the concensus on this one too - he has been slipping ever since Northern Soul... There's some class radio sessions of stuff from that CD, anyone heard them? Also a storming version of Come On and of Slide Away (hums bass line to himself smiling)

somewhere in my attic i have a couple of his demos for 'urban hymns' and they are beautiful. i wasn't a fan of the album, or the solo stuff (cept maybe the first single).

'a northern soul' is one of my favourite albums ever.

The first single off his second album was alright and I saw him doing Song For The Lovers accoustic on TV once and it was ace but apart from that his solo stuff didn't do it for me at all. Releasing a single about how rich you are ("Money To Burn) is never a good move either.

There's a Verve box set coming out later this year so maybe the Urban Hymms demos will be on there. Or we could all go to Martins attic for a listen and maybe set Sparky free while we're there. Or did he keep Sparky in the basement? I forget.

there was one song on his last album i thought was alright 'God in the numbers' i think its called. I used to think Ashcroft was the man. I saw the verve a couple of times and you could see in his eyes that he fucking meant it. I don't think he does anymore.

whatever else you say, he has a gorgeous voice...I have one of those x-ray magazine discs that I've been listning to recently which has him singing Check the Meaning on an Xfm acoustic session, it's a lovely performance. I don't often like love songs but Song For Lovers is an exception.
