If there was any real purpose to Live Aid is was to be a tool to inform people that they could make a difference, that by making monetary donations they could help people.
The Tsunami appeal needed no such publicity people had already made huge donations; they understood they could help. So if the publicity wasn't to make people "Give us your fucking money", what was it for?
And surely people can donate without needing a gig or record in exchange for their cash? People may have given their time for free creating this event but there is still a huge waste of money spent on resources (think fuel for transport for one, beer donated for a free bar for another) that could have just been donated if the gig didn't happen.
If we need these kind of events then create an imaginary gig with a huge bill and get everyone to donate the costs they would have paid had the event been real and they participated. |

What's all this past-tense? The "huge donnations" made so far are nowhere near enough to help these countries over the years it will take to rebuild...
And unfortunately, given the way our media works, unless there are celebrity concerts/books/farts released on record it will all be out of the papers and off the tele in a few months. I'm sure this will happen eventually, but if celebreties can keep it high profile enough for awhile then MORE money will be raised, and hopefully more good done. I don't have a rosey enough view of people to think they will keep donating off of their own back now they've paid off the guilt they all felt by having a fat christmas while people were starving...

I used the past tense because people's awareness had already been pricked- in fact even the UK's Disasters Emergency Committee decided it did not need to use anymore publicity before the gig line up was completed.

I understand the power and importance of the media and more importantly I understand this disaster had a good response as people recognised the locations from their holidays, professional news people were actually there on holiday and so able to relay good footage plus there were plenty of white people for Britains to relate to! I am not advocating a media ban or insinuating that people stop giving money! But I do not think the stadium gig was the best way to raise funds and I resent normal working people being asked to put their hands in their pockets by extremely rich celebrities! |

Hmmm. Okay, well given that I am not extremely rich or a celebrity I will still ask you to check out makepovertyhistory.org - give some £££.
(I don't think there is going to be a concert for this, but Richard Curtis and UNISON are involved if you want to have a go at 'em - but GIVE 1st)

Their site is down for some reason-but I know what charity you mean.
You wouldn't be assuming that I criticise without donating first would you?
In fact I have no more money to give, but there are things you can do that involve no financial input. You do what you can.
