I wasn't there Tommy so I can't say for sure, but I trust Erich Fromm, some people really went along with those ideas without being forced into it or threatned to it. |
Sure, I believe you and Mr Fromm too!
Of course a lot of gullible people followed Führer ideas, most of them were probably just selfish and wanted only the best for their own nation whatever it takes, but like I said, I simply can't believe that so many people can become so evil in so little time without a systematic propaganda programme. _________________

We don't need Government propoganda nowadays of course.
We have the tabloid press.

Amidst all of this, where was the people of Finland? |
No doubt committing their own war crimes!
I do believe that all countries in the war committed horrible crimes, but no one will ever talk about what the 'winners' of the war did. Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin probably saved the world from a lunatic, but calling them 'war heroes' is just wrong.
Anyway, Finland in WW2, a short summary:
Finland's struggle in WW2 started in 1939, and it was the Russians who declared war on Finland (for no 'good' reason) then. At that time the Finns got no help from anyone, so it's a little miracle that we managed to hold back the mighty Soviet army.
A peace treaty, that ended the Winter War, was signed in March 1940, but the war broke out again in summer 1941. However, this time the Germans offered their help, and because things were starting to look quite desperate, Finns agreed and allied with them. Britain declared war on Finland. So, the Germans began Operation Barbarossa in Soviet Union, and the Finns liberated the province of Karelia that was lost two years earlier. Things were looking good (for Finland) until the Germans were finally beaten in Stalingrad - the turning point of WW2.
The Brits and Americans started their attack from the west and the Russians from east - the downfall of the 'German empire' had begun.
When it was quite obvious that Germany won't cause too much trouble anymore, Soviet Union could finally concentrate on trying to beat Finland again. With an army that was probably 100 times bigger than ours, it was quite obvious what would happen, but somehow we survived again, and the war finally ended in 1944. Finland had lost the province of Karelia again and another small one in Northern Finland, all the bigger cities were in ruins, everything in Northern Finland was completely destroyed, too many people had lost their lives... At the end of the war, Finland was the only non-allied country in WW2 that wasn't captured, but we paid a horrible price for our independency.
Like Dubya-T said, it was the British who invented that war crimes are only committed by the losing side. Disgraceful, but true, and because of that Finland had to pay a lot of reparations for Soviet Union. For the country that actually started the war... hmmm. _________________

That's not quite what I meant.
I meant to give two points to consider:
1. That the British invented concentration camps.
2. That the perception is that war crimes are comitted by the losing side.
I don't know that it was the British that "invented" this, but as you said Tommy, atrocities are comitted by everyone during war. It's just that the so-called winners believe they occupy some sort of moral high ground.
I read an interesting letter in the paper today. Some old bloke was whinging that they printed photos of the Iraqi prisoner abuse and that it shouldn't be there to be seen by kids. He then went on to say something like "If you were looking for weappons of mass destruction you would go to any lengths to find out where they were". So he thought that sort of thing was perfectly OK, only he didn't want to see it thank you very much.
He then went on to complain about a photo of the cast of Starlight Express saying that it was disgusting and would corrupt young children.
There's no hope with people like that . _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |
