I've listened to it a few times now and I'm not convinced. It sounds like a watered down version of the past two albums. But, on the plus side, I did get a free 'Mercury Rev' T-shirt when I bought it so its not all bad. I hope the Mars Volta album doesn't let me down. |

i've been secretly thinking the same too john.
roots manuva album is the big one, an early definite in this year's top ten albums lists, along with the bright eyes records.
new bravecaptain track "escape" one of the tracks of the year too! |

Amazingly enough, I just heard Car Wash Hair for the first time this morning.
It's beautiful

spooky conincidence thing:
"in a funny way" off of the new mercury rev album has the same intro as "comb your hair" which is by the boo radleys, and which has a similar name to "car wash hair" a bit. it's like a spooky loop that just goes round and round in your mind.
this reminds me of a story that always cracks me up about brian kilcline which i don't have time to tell just now.
not spooky and not a coincidence:
the last track on the new bright eyes album (the one with the light coloured sleeve) goes all boo radleys at the end, "step on the gas go giles!" style i guess is what i would call it.
anyway back to work... |

yeah, but that drum beat that is used on in a funny way/comb your hair is fairly traditional.
didn't jesus and mary chain use it on every one of their songs.....
i love the new mercury rev album anyway and Arise has to be on of the best songs of the year. psychedelic genius.

You can't just casually drop something like that into a thread and then move on! I demand you start a brian kilcline thread and post the story there.
I thought I'd be happy if Mercury Rev just remade 'Deserters Songs' every couple of years and released it with a slightly different cover but, no matter how much you love a band, if they just keep doing the same sort of stuff it does get dull eventually.

I bought 'Run Come Save Me' and expected it all to be bubbly pop rap stuff like the singles but it turned out to be a really dark album. Is the new one a bit more upbeat? |

the brian kilcline story is more for the pub than the messageboard, it needs some real explaining. it involves kevin keegan building walls, which is what kevin keegan used to do for a hobby to relieve stress. the story is a fascinating insight into the mechanics of the male mind.
but as i say, it's one for the pub...
and paulwhite, don't be pissing on me chips like that!
i know it's a fairly common intro, but there surely has to be extra points for mercury rev also having a track called car wash hair. i feel that without that other connection it wouldn't be in the least bit spooky.
i'm with you on arise though, i was thinking when i listened to it on friday that and vermillion are my two favourite songs. and deserters songs i suppose is one of those albums where you wouldn't change anything. great live band too! |

sorry... is it spooky. very.
anyway, i'm gonna be seeing mercury rev soon for the first time. I can't wait, although I have seen some performances on tv which have looked a bit dodgy. He can't seem to sing that well.
The new album definately is a grower, you really have to listen to it intently to 'get it'. I'm sold.

Don't get me started about how much I loved 'Deserters Songs'. I listened to it virtually every day for a year after it came out, I bought 5 copies of it and gave it as a present to various friends, it made me want to live as a pixie in a cabin the Catskill mountains. I thought it was the best album ever and still love it today. I just wished they'd tried something a bit different this time. |

The review of secret migration in Word magazine goes through the career of Mercury Rev and says that 'Boces' was a good album but 'not as good as The Boo Radleys unheralded masterpiece Giant Steps'. Its the first time I've seen the Boo's mentioned in ages. |

I saw Mercury Rev supporting someone back in the day. Was it the Boos in 93? maybe not . There was about 12 people on stage very shambolic and out of tune. Everyone went to the bar. Can anybody help me out with which band it was?
£1 for the first one who gets it. x _________________ "we wanted to make a sound like penguins going to the post office to collect their pension money" |

In the absence of any sort of reply to the above i thought id type to tell you that the secret migration is as wonderful as all the others. You'll get it about the 8th listen xxx _________________ "we wanted to make a sound like penguins going to the post office to collect their pension money" |
