he was quite an important influence on me when I was 20 (1982), I became an Orange Juice fan that year after hearing the single 'I Can't Help Myself'. He talked about Holden Caulfield in interviews and they named their record label Holden Caulfield Universal for their album Rip It Up. I read 'Catcher In The Rye' because of him and it opened up a whole new idea of literature to me, I had no idea that anyone wrote books like that, books that I could relate to directly, informal, personal and quirky.
I saw the news item over someone's shoulder on the tube to work this morning, what a huge shock at such a young age. I hope he makes it through. |
