The decline of Mac the mouth is a sad one, there's some worrying tales doing the Liverpool muso rounds over the last few years. Let's hope he gets his act together. |
Little story my mate Mike told me about Ian McCulloch;
Mike and his mate Phil, who are both in a band called The Garys, are drinking in the bar at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool not too long ago when Phil spots in the corner a solitary figure drinking copious amounts of whiskey, dressed in black and wearing shades despite the fact he's indoors and its pissing down outside. Not being fans of the band (though for the record i am), they are not too sure who he is but then it clicks. It's him from Echo and The Bunnymen, or so Phil reckons. Mike however is convinced it's 80's Radio 1 DJ Mike Read, though common sense prevails and he comes round to the fact that it is McCulloch. Keen to further his budding career and make contacts in the music biz, Mike goes over and introduces himself and sits down for a chat with the man.
All is going well until Mike mentions the debate himself and his drummer had been immersed in at the bar. Now in the middle of the table are a number of small candles in a circle. McCulloch becomes aggitated at his comparison with an 80's has been and graps poor Michael by the collar of his shirt and says "have you ever had your face burnt off?" (perhaps if he had took his shades off it would be apparent that he had never) and tries to push Mike's face down into the candles. Mike being quick minded and alert simply blew the candles out, one by one before Phil and the bar staff intervened and McCulloch was ejected from the premises with the words "he's a prick, he's a fucking prick!" echoing down the street.
True story.

if you've heard the songs "I'll Fly Tonight", "King Of Kings", "Thorn Of Crowns", "Villiers Terrace" and "Happy Death Men" you would'nt be surprised. |

I've heard worse stories about Ian McCulloch and I understand he was temporarily barred from Parr St for beating up 1) hid producer Hugh Jones 2) his bird and 3) and member of studio staff. |

I'm off to see the Bunnymen down in Cornwall in a few weeks (they're playing with Billy Bragg who I also love) for a Surfers Against Sewerage event..... not that I like surfing I must add.
Should I offer him a pint if I see him in the bar? _________________ Be sad, be happy and be wise |

thanks joe.
ian's hair is even more messy than in the picture above, but at least he's still got those sunglasses.
'killing moon' is ace.
just listened to the "flowers" (2001) album the other day as well, there are some pretty good tracks on it, but it does sound a bit samey. nice album though.

yr welcome. ..........yr right, unfortunately the "flowers" album does sound a bit samey.......i just hope they don't experiment too much, cos then they'll probably end-up sounding like some other band.
i remember when U2 came out with thier album "achtung baby" everybody asked each other "Is that U2!?" cuz they sounded so different from thier previous albums.......anwyways "achtung baby" was probably one of best albums they put-out. |
