i'm informed by my spy in tv hits that smash hits has been shut down.
they had great tapes on them in the mid 90's.
+ what about RAW? that was ace. select. mm, obv. it's like a mausoleum of dead magazines these days.[/list] |

There was a documentary on last night about Smash Hits which appeared to have been cobbled together from left over bit of loads of other channel 4 documentaries about all things pop.
Do you reckon there's anyone who doesn't believe that music was at its best when they were between the ages of 14 and 24? People were talking about Take That as though they were The Beatles - they were alright and everything but they were essentially Westlife with a few more dancey tunes and a bit more charisma (Take That, not The Beatles). |

John, I agree, Take That were not the Beatles but they were much much better than Westlife.
For starters, they had much more charisma...haha...and they looked better.
I am biased cos I liked Take That but it feels like even their ballads weren't as boring as Westlife, and they wrote their own songs when they didn't do covers...though I realise some of you will think it's pointless because TT songs weren't that great...but I think there still is some value in that.

Honestly Set I'm not on a mission here to slag off the 'That or to praise Westlife but there's a tendency amongst people to think/write that things in the past were all great and things today are rubbish. It's the same with sitcom's on telly, everyone see's the 60's and 70's as being a golden era but thats just cos you remember the good stuff and filter out the rubbish*. Whereas today you can't filter out 'Two Pints of Lager and A Packet of Crisps' as you're never more than 5 minutes away from an episode on digital TV.
The general thrust of the programme i watched last night (apart from Miranda Sawyer) was that pop is rubbish these days and everyone is bland and manufactured. I don't agree with this thrust and I also reckon that "You Raise Me Up" by Westlife is better than any Take That ballad with the obvious exception of "Back For Good".
* this argument is nicked from an article i once read in a magazine |

But "You Raise Me Up" was originally done by some Irish Crooner in the 60's or 70's so if it's the quality of the song you're using as you're argument it proves the point that pop was better back in the day!
Sorry to be an anorak.....

There was a top program on BBC3 last night going on about how Reeves and Mortimer were the godfathers of the last 10 years of British comedy (in a general sort of way of course), and I have to say that I agree largely.
Bargain on amazoooo at the moment for the Big Night Out DVD - 16 episodes and a documentary for £8!

Haha...thank you Dubya!
I understand your point John, and partly agree, but I still think, objectively, that Take That and East17 were much better groups than Westlife, Boyzone, Backstreet Boys and N'Sync.
Actually, it's not objective as it's my opinion, but what I mean is, I don't think I'm colored by the fact that being 14 was great!

R&M were very good indeed, but weren't they just Morecambe & Wise doing Monty Python? Everything that goes around, comes around.... _________________ We would like to announce that due to cutbacks the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off..... |

There's a book called 'Sunshine on Putty' which also puts forward that theory. Have you seen their driving school video? Its the best thing they ever did and is much better than "A Million Love Songs".
