I've downloaded this album and listened to it once now. Usually I always buy the albums if I like them (if it's possible), but I won't do it this time. Let me tell you what I think of "Let It Be... Naked".
I
love
The Beatles. Oh, I really do. BUT THIS ALBUM IS A BIG CHEAT, IT'S ONLY RELEASED BECAUSE ALL THE SILLY BEATLES FANS WILL BUY IT ANYWAY! I usually hate the idea of all re-releases and "special editions" with one bonus song, but this one is the biggest disappointment ever. I was expecting something different, something good. Ok, this is fairly good, but not if you already have the original album like I do.
I haven't listened to the original one for quite a while actually, but I think all the songs on the 'new' one sound pretty similar. In fact I couldn't even notice a significant difference in some songs. So, unless you're a really big Beatles fan(atic), I recommend that you spend your money on something else and not on this crap release. A previously unreleased bonus track would have changed everything, now you can just buy another copy of Let It Be (original release) - you probably won't notice the difference!
The 'new' versions on "Naked" sound a bit more raw, and in my opinion even slightly worse. The reverb sound that actually makes 'Across The Universe' one of my favourite songs is missing, and 'Let It Be' doesn't catch the feeling of the original release. The only positive surprise on this album is the interesting piano version of 'The Long And Winding Road' - I don't know if it's better than the normal version, but at least it's
slightly
different! Besides that, "Let It Be... Naked" is worse from every possible aspect.

I totally agree with you that this is a cynical rip-off, but it DOES have an unreleased(ish) bonus track - Don't Let Me Down, instead of Maggie Mae.
Maybe that makes it worse, as people who wouldn't have bought it for the different mix might buy it to get this song. |

Oh yeah.. You're right Dave. I didn't realise "Don't Let Me Down" wasn't on the original release... I have that song in my collection so I've heard it many times, but maybe that's a good enough reason for some people to buy the new release. _________________

i think mcCartney just wanted to offer fans his preferred version of this album (and arguably the 'proper' version before Spector pissed on it, esp 'Long and Winding Road'). Its not necessarily a huge rip off. i think that the version of 'Across the Universe' on 'naked' is superior (either way tho its still me favourite Beatles tune). I think Tesco were selling this CD for a tenner, worth the investment if you're not a fan of Phil Spectors hugely overblown production of the original release. |

i think that this lp reminds me that spector went a bit mental. perhaps, there should be a happy medium between the stripped + the overdressed. |

Paul is a petulant child, apparently he's been angry with Spector for years...I mean, the man was given a job and finished it the way he saw best and to the best of his abillities. It's not like Phil came and forced them to hire him. L&P _________________ Man is the only animal clever enough to build The Empire State Building and stupid enough to jump from it. |

If I had written the songs that Paul McCartney wrote for that album and some halfwit stuck angels and tweesticks all over 'em I'd be fucking angry as well. x |

I've been up since five thirty mate. Thats what happens when you get old. Nicotine withdrawal doesn't help. Anyway, now we can talk about everyone else whilst they're still in bed. x |

Sweet Jesus! I didn't go to bed until five!
Is this nicotine withdrawl from not smoking for a few hours, or something altogether more serious? _________________ When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bike. Then I realised that The Lord doesn't work that way, so I stole one and asked him to forgive me. |

But his anger shouldn't be directed at Phil Spector, because The Beatles hired him...you can't be angry at someone because they lack the competense you need, it's your job to get the right person (you as in people, not you personally) and if you don't you blame yourself.
It's one thing if Paul just went around saying the album was crapped over, but apparently everytime he's ever seen Spector he's grumped and not spoken to him etc etc. L&P _________________ Man is the only animal clever enough to build The Empire State Building and stupid enough to jump from it. |

of course you can be angry at someone you've hired if they haven't done the job you wanted them to do. it has nothing to do with competence -- spector's a genius. his ideas didn't end up meshing with the beatles and it ended up an overblown production with spector spunking his signature load all over it. it's not the first time the old producer/artist relationship didn't jive, and it certainly won't be the last...
personally i've always liked the stripped down versions... and it's nice to have a quality copy rather than my overplayed beaten-up bootlegs.

Ok, you all have a good point, but hey, the two versions aren't that much different in my opinion. A couple of ding-dong bells and oooh-aaahs here and there - who the fuck cares? Of course I respect Paul McCartney's decision to release the version he wanted to, but don't be so naive - I don't think that's the only reason. And besides, The Beatles were MASSIVE then - they could have fucked the record companies and released bagpipe polka music if they had wanted to! _________________
