|

Some time ago I bought a new addition to my T.Rex / Marc Bolan collection, "The Very Best of T.Rex". I quite like T.Rex actually, Marc Bolan was a fucking genius, and I have some of their albums too. But I'm terrible at remembering song names, so I just bought this best of album, believing that it really has the best songs of T.Rex on it.
The funny thing is that I already had "The Best of T.Rex" and the tracklisting is completely different. The main reason why I bought the new one was that I didn't recognise all of the songs on it.
OK, I got back home, put on the T.Rex CD and started to boogie.
Then I started reading the booklet and saw this little advertisement there:
Also available: The Very Best of T.Rex VOL.2
VOL 2?! What the fuck?
Here's the album cover of the first one.
Does it say somewhere that it's just Volume One? Does it fuck?
No of course it doesn't, so that silly people like me would have to buy two best of albums instead of one. Bugger.
Well, fortunately T.Rex were good enough so I think I'm going to get the Vol 2 as well, but it's still bloody annoying that the record companies cheat us like that. It's not much, but I know they've done it on purpose.
I wonder what "The Greatest Hits of T.Rex" is like!!
This isn't the first time either. Some years ago I bought "The Best of Bob Dylan", again hoping that it would have all his best songs on it. Later I found that there are at least Volumes 2 and 3 as well...

Well, that's not actually the point, because this best of album is
bloody excellent
! I just think they should tell customers who don't necessarily know much about the band if there are more than just one volume. This CD was wrapped in plastic so there was no way I could have checked it before buying. I would have returned it of course if I had been very disappointed. _________________

the thing is they might not have known whether or not they were going to release a 2nd best of. It was probably a 'see how the first one does, and then release another one if it does well' sort of thing.

I'm not sure if that's the truth either, Paul.
The Volume One seems to have all the best T.Rex songs from 1972 to 1975 (and a couple of songs from 1976) - The Volume Two has the best tunes of the last years of T.Rex, from 1975 to Marc Bolan's death in 1977. _________________

Here's another one.
Special editions and Limited Collector's Editions.
Especially those that get released only a very short time after the first release of the actual album. Do you know what I mean?
For example, I bought this Hanoi Rocks album a long time ago, and not very long after that it was released in the UK and the UK edition had 4 bonus tracks. Now that's annoying.
I could give many other examples as well. _________________

Where can I find that song then?
I'd like to hear it.
Oh bugger.
I just realised that it's on "Bolan Boogie" and I have it.
Listening now... Yes, it sounds ace.
But 'Get It On' is still better. _________________

People seem to like greatest hits collections, there's 14 of them in the UK Top 40 Album chart this week. The top 20 contains albums by The Shadows, Phil Collins and Dire Straits - it like living in the 1980's all over again but without Liverpool FC being good. |
