1. I take back the boo thing, I mean, it was silly of English fans to boo the Swiss keeper, especially when Rooney deserved his card, but over the past day I've been shocked at how boo-friendly all countries are becoming, yesterday Swedish fans (whom I had always perceived as decent) booed Italian players for no particular reason. Booing is wrong dammit!

All the fans all over the world do that, Setareh, it's not just the English and Swedish fans. I'm surprised that you say that, because Italian fans are just as bad or even worse, in my opinion. But I can't see anything wrong with that, it's of course a bit annoying sometimes, but it's a part of the game.

And I'm very Boo-friendly too... oh wait, you meant THAT kind of a boo! Rolling Eyes

2. Pride over national heritage etc? I just don't understand...I can't think of one country that has a heritage I'd be proud of.
Just so it's cleared, even though I don't love the national song singing at the beginning of the match my complaint is of fans singing God save the queen in the middle of the match, not the players at the start of the game.

It's just a song! For most of the English people it has lost its meaning a long time ago, people who sing it now don't probably like the monarchy and the queen... It's just their national anthem, and I've heard many fans singing their home country's anthem during a football match, and I just can't see anything wrong in that. Maybe the song itself is 'ugly', but the whole point is to support your team, I don't think that they're thinking about politics in a football game!

Quote:
Anyway, what are you proud of? Countries do not exist, it's a human creation, so you can't love something that doesn't exist. If you love the nature, you love the nature, if you love the government, it's the government you love and so on.

What are you saying? Countries do exist, not in a concrete form though of course. I think I know what you're trying to say though... But even I'd love to be like John Lennon and imagine that there are no countries and no religion and no war (etc etc.), I have to be realistic - there are countries and there always will be. The world right now would be a chaotic place without any kind of borders, that's sad, but it's a fact.
And even if something doesn't concretically exist, it doesn't mean that you can't dislike or like it. I miss my hometown where I spent 20 years of my life, it's my home and it will always have a special place in my heart. Finland is my home too, and if I ever move abroad, it will still be my home country and I will support Finland in football and other sports. We have our own good language here and there are many other things I can be proud of. And I don't think there's anything wrong in that either!
Finland will always be my home, even though I moved to Australia for 50 years, there's no better place to live in. Home sweet home. Rolling Eyes

None of the examples you bring up Tommy are the country...if you get my point. The language is the language that you love (how can you love Finnish?? Wink ), and the fact that it's your home, well it's an emotional thing, you'd feel the same for Zimbabwe had you grown up there...I don't know if this discussion works on-line...hopefully we'll meet some day and I'll be able to explain better.
Either way the notion of loving a country is totally foreign to me, and I can only speak for me.

Boo-ing without reason IS a new phenomenon. I have seen many league games in my time, and international games, fans won't boo a player just because he is running with a ball. But in this tournament it seems quite common.
Usually when this happens it's because a player did something out of the ordinary, say kicked one of 'your' players out of the game or something. Now it seems to be happening without reason.

Love and Peace

"It's just a song!"

Many national songs are not just songs, they're insane and aggressive towards others, see the Turkish one.

BLIMEY!!

look at this thread, can't believe those cute little jumping badgers started this off!

you should all be ashamed of yourselves Wink

as for the songs... blame fifa - its their mandate that national anthems are played before each match....
like, if the england team played wake up boo! before the game, everyone would be singing that too. am i wrong?

as for the booing, in a wierd sort of way it is a sign of respect. honest.
an opposition player who a supporter wants to do badly will get booed, always has, always will, whether right or wrong, and an opposition player who is rubbish won't get booed as no-one is bothered whether he plays any worse than usual... (unless of course he is a dirty little cropper!)

and tomi - finland now sounds a great place to visit!
can i stay at yours? i wanna meet father christmas, bet he don't boo at footy games...

1 I used to sing Greens or Team instead of Queen - used to help. Shite tune and shite words but then they all are. Apart from the Eastern European ones.

2. Ciranm makes a fare point about english/us nationalism being abhored - i ain't nationalistic but i'm fiercly loyal to the city i'm from, if someones loyalties are in their nationality its not neccessarily a bad thing.

3. Theres a good chaper on England not being that patriotic in Jeremy Paxmans book on the English - he puts a compelling argument saying that due to our history and the social changes to our society we're the first post-nation nation. Can't put all the arguments for that view here but the book is worth a read.

4. Booing - sometimes its petty, sometimes its just fun. I love banter at football, and sometimes the booing is part of it.

5. Though booing national anthems is shite

6. Setarah, after Malmo 92 i can't believe any Swede would ever want England to do well. I don't blame yer.

7. But Euro2004 has been pretty trouble free - the stuff in the Algarve (which i haven't in seen on tele) ain't good but i don't think its entirely football based - if it was there'd have been loads more trouble in Lisbon etc.

8. "Countries do not exist" is a beautiful sentement and one i'd share to an extent; however there's always been tribes or settlements etc and there's always been boundaries between groups of people.

9 I love the energy in Britain, and its quirky weather. But i'd love to live in the Basque region or (sorry Tommy Boo) Finland. But i've only holidayed in those places so it does give me a rose tinted view of them i guess

10. Huge drinking culture problem in our country, unfortunately i think most of us contribute to it from time to time

11. I never route for Scotland, top place top humoured people but could never support them in footie, it goes back to the home internationals and the fact that i know lots of Scots and i love the banter between the English n Scots. I would never want them to route for us either!

12. There's not a national team I ever want to see lose (well Holland sometimes 'cos of their band n that but they are normally beautiful to watch so i can't really want them to lose) but there's plenty of club sides in England i wanna see fail!

13. I like Ian Wright but he's a shite summariser bloke, speaks far to much like an irrational fan! Who'd ever be one of them Rolling Eyes

Ian Wright said: I don't think Portugal are good enough to win the tournament, but England were.
(or something very close to that)

heh, is that why Portugal outplayed England last night. Rolling Eyes

I don't know if he's any worse than Alan Hansen trying to say the things he expects his employers want him to say, tho.

1. Setareh.

2. Norrköping, Sweden (I've lived in several countries though and don't feel like any country is home really, only Norrköping, which is a town, not a country).

Neh, my heart burns for Juventus and the Italian national team but that's it, for me they're just teams, not a representation of an entire nationality.

Poor Sweden are out...ggggrrrrrrr...sad thing is, I had a feeling Zlatan would miss it, something about so much pressure on such young shoulders and the Dutch going extra hard on him.

Van Nistelrooy was a bit out of order on several occasions. Once he fake fell and then told Olof Mellberg to 'watch it', I read his lips...pppffff....

As with any penalty shoot out, it's always nice when more than one player misses, so one person isn't alone in their pain. L&P

P.S. I don't know what Malmö 92 incident you're speaking of, I only have pleasant memory of happy Scots from the Euro 92 (it's a great pleasure living in a town that hosts a major footballing competition).
I actually half liked England until about 96 (not to say they were nr 1 for me)...I guess I'd gotten to know English media well enough by then so I was put off.
I distinctively remember wanting England to win the penalty shoot out when Gareth Southgate missed...wow...what was I thinking???

Yeah, I suppose that Finland is a good place to visit, but if you want to see good bands, good football, good pubs, then Finland isn't the right place for you. And that's why I sometimes think that it's not the right place for me either! Rolling Eyes
I once sent my wishlist to Father Christmas and he even replied to my letter. It wasn't handwritten or anything but it was still quite nice. That was last year actually. I got a toy car and new football shoes. This year I want a pony.
If you don't mind sleeping on the sofa, you can definitely stay at my place if you ever come over to Finland. I can invite you all actually, but I hope that you don't all come at the same time!
I'm moving away (to Turku, Martin knows what it's like!Rolling Eyes) pretty soon actually, so if anyone of you ever wants to see the old capital of Finland, I'll be there.
