i just wrote a massive post about michael owen but my fucking page crashed and i can't be arsed to do it again so i'll summarize.

i think that benitez has called his bluff (something houllier would never have done)

if he wanted to play for liverpool there would be none of this

if he doesnt he can fuck off

he may have scored more goals than anyone else last year but sixteen league goals is not good enough for a 'class' striker although fair enough, he wasn't playing with the most attack minded team last year (i'm so glad houllier has gone bless his big bulgy eyes)

you are right, the fact that he is thought of as an england player first really grips my shit (as sice would say)

a team doesn't need a player that automatically takes a place every week regardless of form or commitment. he looked as if he wished he was elsewhere for most of last season

he is a great player.

if we could do a cash/morientes deal i would be well happy

'can you hear the drums fernando'

either way dave, i'm looking forward to this season although i don't think we'll challenge for the title. benitez has got balls. we should meet up for a drink before a game if i can get out of this dump. bring it on.

i'd like to think that's true. benitez seems like a smart guy, and there has to come a point where the club says "sign or leave. now". but player-power being what it is, i don't know if it's true. with hindsight this should have been sorted out last summer, with owen given an ultimatum then. but he'd probably have left with the season we'd had and houllier still in charge.

that's fair enough. he's said he does want to stay if the club is going to be successful. but that may be bullshit. i don't really see this as the best time to leave with a new manager and new players. i really expected him to sign at least a short extension to give benitez a chance to prove himself.

i think the lack of service was a major factor. owen will probably score goals in any team. i'd just like to see how many he'd get in a liverpool team that's really going all-out attack.

i don't give a shit about england despite being english. it's a media thing that owen's always asked about england in interviews, and injuries are a blow to sven and possibly to liverpool . i don't believe the myth that he cares more about playing for england than liverpool, but maybe that's cos i don't want to.

i think that's true. having said that i wished i was somewhere else for most of last season! it's easy to compare stevie g's all-action approach last season, where he was trying to single-handedly carry the team, with owen's lethargic-looking displays, and criticise owen. maybe it's harder to dominate games from up-front, and he relies more on service. when he dropped deeper to come looking for the ball he became less effective, so it's a bit of a catch-22. the body language wasn't good though.

agree with both of those now. if it's come to this and owen won't sign, then we have no choice but to sell. don't know much about morientes and alonso, but it must be a reasonable exchange if we can get enough cash from the owen deal to get alonso.

it still breaks my heart though. 150+ goals is a lot of good memories. a lot of shitty away trips saved by a moment of owen magic. cardiff 2001 the finest hour.

i'm struggling a bit for optimism at the moment, but things have to improve. i'm very impressed by benitez so far. a title challenge is probably too much to expect, but the gap must be closed and there's no reason we can't move up to third as united look nothing special.

meeting for a drink before a game sounds good Very Happy and thanks for posting such a long reply - it's made my day!
